Sports Day

No inclement weather was going to stop Magill from holding its annual Sports Day this year! Our new time slot of Thursday 10 September proved to be a hit, with the following day being a School Closure ‘Show Day’. Blue skies greeted us from the outset, setting the scene perfectly for a fantastic day. Teachers and Year 6 leaders bustled around like busy bees, preparing and setting up for the big day.

As students arrived, the schoolyard was soon a sea of red, green, blue and yellow, buzzing with anticipation. The Year 6 leaders kicked things off with a high-energy Health Hustle, getting everyone warmed up and ready to go. Before the morning activities began, each team proudly performed their chants, showcasing the passion and spirit they have for their houses.

The morning session was divided between our Reception to Year 2 students, who took to the JP oval, and our Year 3–6 students, who competed across the upper primary oval, courts and gym. The R–2 program featured a variety of new activities designed to challenge and develop fundamental skills such as throwing, catching, kicking, jumping, accuracy and agility. Students rescued teddy bears, moved sand, lobbed bocce bowls, and threw, kicked, rolled, bounced and jumped their way through the activities before finishing with their hurdling and sprinting events later in the day.

Meanwhile, our Year 3–6 students competed in events including shot put, hurdles, soccer kick, vortex throw and scooterboards, as well as three new events: hockey dribble, corner spry and 2-Way Tug of War.

The middle of the day saw buddy classes come together for activities that encouraged teamwork and leadership. Students worked side by side in events such as Weave the Hoop, Egg and Spoon Race and Rob the Nest, before finishing with a crowd favourite – the Water Relay.

In the afternoon, the R–2 and Year 3–6 students once again split into their groups for events that really brought out their competitive spirit. Ribbons were awarded to individuals and teams who placed first through fourth in events including the baton relay, long-distance run and sprints.

It was wonderful to see students, teachers, support staff and parents working together like a well-oiled, magnificent Magill machine. The enthusiasm, encouragement and teamwork across the school helped create a fantastic atmosphere for everyone to enjoy.

The day concluded with an exciting relay featuring some of Magill’s fastest students from Reception to Year 6, all racing to earn those last-minute points for their teams. Once the cheers settled, the scorers tallied the results and passed them on to Mr Iannunzio for the final announcement.

After a closely fought competition, Penfold finished on top by just a few points, taking out the 2026 Sports Day championship. Ferguson finished in second place, followed by Murray in third and Tolmer in fourth.

The behaviour and sportsmanship displayed by all teams throughout the day was outstanding, with students truly living up to our school values. It was also fantastic to see such a large turnout of parents and families enjoying the day, cheering on the students and adding to the wonderful atmosphere. A heartfelt thank you goes to our dedicated staff and Year 6 leaders for their hard work, and to our wonderful Magill community, who never fail to show up and support our students.
