Year 1/2 Unit

Hello 1/2 Families
It continues to be a busy and action packed term as we approach the back end of term with lots of amazing learning opportunities and activities happening in the 1/2 area.
Aqua Awareness Sessions
This week our students were visited by staff of the Kyneton Sports and Recreation Centre in preparation for our swim safety sessions. Here students learnt about being safe near water and being prepared for their upcoming lessons. Our students showed great enthusiasm at the pool and enjoyed learning about water safety. We would like to say a big congratulations to our 1/2 cohort on a great effort and behaviour as they undertook their lessons. Thank you to our parent helpers for your assistance in making this possible, it is greatly appreciated!
Literacy Learning
The 1/2 students have continued their author studies over the past fortnight. We have looked at two Australian based authors - Graeme Base and Pamela Allen. The students have analysed the different types of words used by authors ie. adjectives and verbs and used these to visualise what has been read. This is a great strategy that our students can also practise at home. Students have been practising using descriptive words and verbs to create interesting writing. They have recently completed a writing piece “My Monster,” using their imagination and adjectives to describe their creation.
Mathematics Learning
The 1/2 students have been deep diving into place value over the fortnight. They have continued making, recording and ordering a range of 2, 3 and 4 digit numbers. Students have been able to show their thinking using place value charts and thinkboards and have reinforced their place value knowledge through a number of games.
Harmony Day / Housemates
On Tuesday the 17th of March our students participated in a school wide Harmony Day / Housemates activity. This was a great opportunity for students to work with a range of students in their houses across the different year levels. This year's Harmony Day message focussed on “Everyone Belongs,” with the key themes being inclusivity and respect for all people. Students were encouraged to work together and take part in learning activities that encouraged them to think about things that are special to them and where they feel they belong. It was great to see students working cooperatively and their learning will be displayed in our hall at a later date.
Inquiry Learning
The 1/2 students have continued to learn about ‘Country’ and the importance of Country to Indigenous Australians. We have continued to add to our shared version of an Australian landscape in the hallway between the two rooms. Students have been learning through Aboriginal stories of how the land was shaped and created and have recently added their own version of Tiddalick the frog. We look forward to celebrating our learning with an incursion in Week 10 that will showcase Aboriginal culture. This incursion will include artefacts, storytelling and aboriginal dance. Keep your eye on Compass for details of the incursion.
