WPS Community Children’s Garden

Garden Club’s Clean Up Australia efforts were delayed a couple weeks, so we did our clean up this week. Half the students hunted down rubbish with volunteer parent Clare, her pre-school daughter and a few Year 5 leadership students. They managed to fill one full bag of mainly scrunchable plastic rubbish that had been blown and washed into the drainage lines and under the bushes in the area of school behind the hall and around the school garden.

The other half of the students worked with Vigie, her pre-school daughter and I, cleaning up English Ivy that was invading through the school back fence. English Ivy is becoming a big problem weed in Woodend, smothering native trees and covering the ground, preventing natural regrowth. It only produces seed when it climbs up other structures, so by removing it from the school’s back fence and trees, we have done our bit to stop it being spread into neighbouring gardens and Five Mile Creek by birds who carry the ivy seed.

After a good effort cleaning up rubbish and weeds, everyone raided the garden to take home a bounty or raspberries, corn, multicoloured ripe tomatoes & kale.
