Celebrating Our Grandparents
Last Friday, our Year 5 students had the privilege of celebrating Grandparents Mass, a special occasion that brought together generations in prayer, gratitude, and community. It was wonderful to see so many grandparents sharing this celebration with their grandchildren and witnessing the important role they continue to play in family life.
As I reflected during the Mass, I found myself thinking about my own grandparents and the tremendous impact they had on my life. I was especially blessed to have a close relationship with my grandmothers, both of whom have now passed away. Yet their influence remains with me every day. I can still recite their phone numbers from memory, and I often find myself recalling the conversations, encouragement, and unconditional love they shared with me. Grandparents have a unique way of making us feel known, valued, and loved, and the memories they create with us stay in our hearts forever.
I am also reminded of how fortunate my own children are to still have all their grandparents actively involved in their lives. As Fr John reflected during the Mass, grandparents are able to pass on their wisdom, values, and experiences to younger generations in a way that is truly special. Their stories teach resilience, their guidance offers perspective, and their love provides a sense of belonging.
I see this firsthand in my own family. My son, who graduated last year and is now studying at the University of Newcastle, is currently living with his grandfather. The bond they share is something very special. This time together is a blessing for both of them and an example of the rich relationships that can develop when different generations journey through life side by side.
Pope Leo XIV has recently spoken about the important role of grandparents, describing them as “models of faith and inspiration for the young” and encouraging families to value the wisdom they pass on from one generation to the next. He has also reminded us that grandparents and the elderly are “witnesses of hope, capable of lighting the path for new generations.” These words beautifully capture what so many of our students experience through their relationships with their grandparents.
As a school community, we thank our grandparents for the countless ways they support, encourage, and nurture our children. Whether through shared stories, family traditions, words of wisdom or simply being present, they help shape the values and character of the next generation.
To all our grandparents, thank you for the love, faith, and wisdom you bring to our community. May you know how deeply appreciated you are, not only today, but every day.

A Message from the Trustees of Edmund Rice Education Australia
In recent weeks, there have been media reports surrounding the financial issues that the Christian Brothers are facing here in the Oceania Province.
I have attached a letter below from the Trustees of Edmund Rice Education.
It is important that we acknowledge the historical sexual abuse that occurred in the past and that we support the victims of this historical abuse going forward as is outlined in the letter from the Trustees.
