Kii Class 5/6 Families,
Main Lesson – Class Play, Roma Amor
We have begun the term with our Class Play Main Lesson, Roma Amor, which is a comedic story of love, misunderstandings and the antics of Roman characters as their lives intertwine.
It was wonderful to see so many students working hard over the holidays to learn their lines, ready for our first rehearsal on the first day of term – and a huge thank you to families for supporting this process.
Over the past two weeks of rehearsals, the students have been absolutely fantastic. They have listened attentively to and followed stage directions, supported and encouraged one another, and shared creative ideas about how scenes could be performed. Participation in class plays provides students with a valuable opportunity to develop confidence, oral expression and empathy as they step into the roles of different characters. It also strengthens teamwork and helps students recognise the importance of taking individual responsibility and contributing their efforts to achieve a shared goal.
When students are not required for rehearsals, they are working on character studies, selecting one main character and one secondary character to explore in greater depth. They are considering each character’s appearance, physicality, personality and motivations, using evidence from the script to support their interpretations. This task develops descriptive writing, character analysis and the ability to support ideas with textual evidence.
The students are also writing summaries of each scene, identifying the key events and important details and expressing them in their own words. This strengthens reading comprehension, sequencing, summarising and written expression, while helping students build a deeper understanding of the play as a whole.
Alongside rehearsals and writing tasks, the students have been working with Antoinette in Craft to create their costumes and props, bringing their characters and the world of Ancient Rome to life. We look forward to seeing their hard work, creativity and collaboration continue to develop as we work towards our performance!
Performance date: Thursday, 29th October at 5.30pm
Reading
Literature Circles are continuing this term, with students reading and discussing their novels in small groups. They take on different discussion roles that encourage them to engage with their texts from a range of perspectives and share their thinking with others. Through these discussions, they continue to develop their reading comprehension by summarising, making connections, exploring vocabulary, asking thoughtful questions and supporting their ideas with evidence from the text.
Mathematics
To begin the term, our mathematics focus has been on percentages. Students have been representing percentages using hundred grids and bar models, exploring complementary percentages, and converting between tenths, hundredths, halves, quarters, fractions, decimals and percentages. They have also been developing their skills in calculating percentages, including finding percentage discounts and using multiplication and division to work with fractions and percentages. Learning activities have been differentiated to consolidate understanding and provide extension where appropriate, with students working at levels suited to their individual learning needs. These activities develop number sense, multiplicative thinking and a deeper understanding of the relationships between different ways of representing numbers.
Please note that the Ancient Rome projects are on display in the classroom for the first half of term four if you would like to come in and have a look at them sometime before or after school.
