Mental Health & Wellbeing

Between 2023 and 2026, the Victorian Department of Education is rolling out the Mental Health in Primary Schools (MHiPS) initiative across the state. This program aims to strengthen mental health support and promote wellbeing in primary schools.

Many of you will already know me as a classroom teacher, particularly in the senior school. I am delighted to now be working in a new capacity as Mental Health and Wellbeing Leader (MHWL) at St Mary’s. I look forward to supporting the development of mental health literacy among our students, staff and families, and to build a strong, supportive wellbeing culture within our school community.

Mental Health and Wellbeing Leaders are classroom teachers who work across the school to implement a whole-school approach to mental health and wellbeing.

This role includes:

  • building the capacity of school staff to recognise and support students experiencing mental health concerns
  • Develping clear referral pathways within the school and to external community services for students who may require further support
  • coordinating mental health supports for students by working collaboratively the school wellbeing and leadership teams, teachers, parents and carers, and external agencies
  • advocating for student voice and empowering students to actively participate in decisions about their wellbeing and mental health

Through this initiative, we hope to continue strengthening a positive and supportive environment where every student feels safe, connected and able to thrive.

Keep an eye out for my segment each fortnight in the newsletter, where I will share strategies and practical ideas to support the mental health and wellbeing of our wonderful students and families.
