The Importance of Reducing Screen Time

In today's digital world, screens are a regular part of everyday life. While technology can support learning, creativity and communication, it is important for children to have a healthy balance between screen-based activities and other experiences.

Research shows that excessive screen time can impact children's sleep, concentration, physical activity levels and overall wellbeing. Spending long periods on devices may also reduce opportunities for face-to-face social interaction, imaginative play and time spent outdoors.

Children benefit greatly from activities that encourage movement, creativity and connection with others. Reading books, playing board games, drawing, building, exploring nature and participating in sports are all excellent alternatives to recreational screen use.

Families can support healthy screen habits by:

  • Setting clear limits on recreational screen time.
  • Creating screen-free times, such as during meals and before bed.
  • Encouraging outdoor play and physical activity.
  • Modelling balanced technology use as adults.
  • Prioritising family activities that promote conversation and connection.

Small changes can make a big difference. By creating a balanced approach to technology, we can help children develop healthy habits that support their learning, wellbeing and social development both now and into the future.
