Year 5/6 News

Literacy

This term, students are developing their understanding of sentence structure by learning to identify and create grammatically correct simple, compound and complex sentences. They are focusing on using correct punctuation and capital letters, identifying subjects and predicates, and extending their writing through the use of sentence stems and their own ideas. Students are also strengthening their comprehension skills through regular reading activities, including comprehension exercises that encourage them to think deeply about texts and make connections to their reading.

Students are further developing their persuasive writing skills by researching environmental issues and learning how to communicate their ideas effectively. They are identifying causes and impacts of environmental challenges, gathering information from reliable sources, and using persuasive techniques such as emotive language, rhetorical questions, facts and repetition. Their learning culminates in writing a persuasive letter with a clear introduction, supporting arguments, conclusion and call to action.
