Science Term 3 Newsletter

Welcome to Term 3
Hello families,
Welcome back. Across all year levels this term, we will be focusing on Physical Sciences. Students will continue to engage in hands-on investigations where they ask questions, make predictions, and test their ideas just like scientists. Through engaging and practical learning experiences, the focus is on nurturing curiosity, building confidence, and fostering a genuine enjoyment of science.
Foundation:
This term, the Foundation classes will become movement investigators! They will explore the different ways objects move, including sliding, rolling, spinning and bouncing, and learn how forces can change an object’s movement. Through hands-on investigations, students will discover why some objects roll further or bounce higher than others and how an object’s size, shape and material affect the way it moves. They will make predictions, test different objects, record their observations in simple tables and compare their findings with others. Using what they discover, they will identify patterns and ask new questions about movement.
Year 1/2:
This term, Year 1 and 2 will become force investigators! They will explore how pushes and pulls can change an object’s movement, speed, direction or shape. Through hands-on activities using playground equipment, sports balls and toy cars, students will investigate how the strength and direction of a force affect the way objects move. They will make predictions, test how different pushes and pulls change speed and direction, and record and compare their observations. Using simple scientific language, they will describe forces and identify how pushes and pulls are used in everyday activities.
Year 344:
This term, Year 3 and 4 will become heat energy explorers. They will find out about different sources of heat energy and learn how heat can be generated and transferred from one object to another. Through hands-on investigations, students will observe and measure changes in temperature and discover how different types of heat energy work in everyday situations. They will also test a range of materials to determine which are good conductors of heat and which are effective insulators. Students will make predictions, record their observations and use their findings to explain how heat moves and how materials can help transfer or reduce heat.
Year 5/6:
In Science this term, our Year 5/6 students are exploring how materials can act as electrical conductors or insulators and how energy is transferred and transformed within electrical circuits. They will investigate the roles of different circuit components and learn how each part contributes to making a circuit function. As part of this unit, they will work collaboratively to design, build and test electrical circuits that solve practical problems, making improvements to their designs based on their observations and results.
