Welcome to Term 3

The Year 2 students have made a great start to the Term! We are enjoying hearing about their wonderful holidays and connecting with each student. We are looking forward to our excursion to the Moorabbin Airport Mueseum.

General Reminders

Please remember to wait outside the building at drop-off and pick-up times – no parents in the corridors. Your support helps us create a calm and orderly environment for our students.

We also kindly ask that parents and family members please avoid standing directly in front of the 2A and 2B classroom windows after school drop-off and before dismissal, as this can be distracting for our students and can interrupt classroom routines and learning time. 

Given the cooler weather , please ensure students are dressed appropriately with school jumpers, long pants and beanies. Please ensure all uniform items are labelled, as we are still finding many unnamed items.

Please pack a recess snack, a fruit break snack and lunch for your child each day. We continue Nude Food again this term with the aim of bringing less rubbish into lunchboxes. Fruit break must be a piece of fruit, yoghurt or cheese, as we only have 10 minutes to eat.  Please avoid including products with nuts in lunchboxes in support of those students with allergies. Water bottles are kept in the classroom for easy access and to encourage your child to hydrate regularly. 

Finally, thank you to the families who have already done so, but please ensure that you let your class teacher know well in advance if you have a family holiday planned during the school term, in addition to putting it on to Compass.

Parent Helpers

At CEPS, we highly value working as a whole community and encourage the participation and involvement of our families. 

When helping with the children at CEPS, it is required that you wear a Working with Children’s Check (WWCC) displayed on a lanyard at all times. 

If you have not got a WWCC and wish to volunteer, application forms can be found online at: www.workingwithchildren.vic.gov.au

Remember to sign in each day you volunteer at CEPS via the computer at the office. This is a mandatory requirement. You will also be required to sign out. 

Teaching and Learning

English

Speaking & Listening 

Students will develop their speaking and listening skills through circle time activities, classroom discussions, and group and individual presentations. They will practise expressing their ideas clearly and confidently, using appropriate vocabulary to communicate their understanding. Students will also have opportunities to share and present their written work to the class, building their confidence in speaking to an audience and responding to the ideas of others.

Writing

This term, students will continue to develop their writing skills by exploring recounts and persuasive writing. They will learn how to write engaging recounts by sequencing events in the correct order, using descriptive language, and reflecting on personal experiences. Students will also be introduced to persuasive writing, where they will learn to express their opinions, support their ideas with reasons and examples, and use persuasive language. 

Reading

This term, students will develop a range of reading comprehension skills through the exploration of both fiction and non-fiction texts. They will learn to identify and understand text features, such as headings, captions, diagrams, and glossaries, and use these features to support comprehension. Students will also explore the difference between fact and opinion, learning how to distinguish between information that can be proven and personal viewpoints.

Students will investigate an author’s purpose, considering why a text has been written and how authors communicate their message to readers. They will also examine cause and effect relationships within texts to deepen their understanding of events and ideas. Throughout the term, students will practise a variety of reading comprehension strategies to help them make meaning from texts, draw conclusions, and support their thinking with evidence.

To build fluency and confidence, students will participate in reading with expression through scripts and plays, focusing on pace, tone, volume, and character voice to engage an audience and bring texts to life.

Mathematics

This term, students will develop their understanding of key mathematical concepts including multiplication, division, shape, and number operations. They will build fluency with multiplication and division facts and apply these skills to solve a range of problems in meaningful contexts. Students will explore different strategies for calculating and reasoning with numbers, strengthening their understanding of operations and how they can be used efficiently.

In the area of shape, students will identify, describe, compare, and classify 2D and 3D shapes using appropriate mathematical language. They will investigate the properties of shapes and explore how these can be used in everyday situations.

Throughout the term, students will engage in problem-solving activities to develop confidence, accuracy, and deeper understanding in their mathematical thinking.

Humanities

This term in Humanities, students will explore the topic of transport and examine how different forms of transport have changed over time. They will investigate the history and development of cars, planes, trains, and boats, learning about important inventions, technological advancements, and the impact these modes of transport have had on people's lives and communities.

Students will compare transport from the past with transport used today and consider how transportation has shaped the way people live, work, and travel. They will also look to the future by exploring sustainable transport options and discussing how new technologies can help reduce environmental impacts. Through research, discussions, and inquiry-based activities, students will develop an understanding of how transport continues to evolve to meet the needs of a changing world.

CEPS VALUES

COURTESY    RESPECT    CO-OPERATION    RESPONSIBILITY 

Each week all classes will engage in 'The Respectful Relationships Sessions' as well as discuss our CEPS Skill of the Week. These lessons will encourage the development of skills that promote our school values and the positive and personal growth of all students. GROWTH MINDSET: This term, the students will explore ways that they can change their thinking from ‘I can’t do it yet, but I can get there'. We will be looking closely at the power of ‘Yet’, and we will develop strategies to overcome difficulties in their learning and build on their resilience and positive outlook.

In Year 2, we continue to give out awards on a Friday afternoon assembly for students who have displayed the CEPS values.

Supporting learning from home

Please ensure that you are reading with your child every night. Students can read books of their own choice or an unlevelled reader from school. Take time to ask your child questions about the text to ensure that they are reading for meaning. Students will practise their weekly poem each night and complete any Mathletics tasks set for them by their teacher. 

Communication

You are welcome to contact your classroom teacher via email through Compass. Whilst families are navigating the transition to Compass, we are also still using Dojo for messages between parents and teachers at this stage. This is likely to be phased out at some stage this year. We are also still currently using Dojo to share learning updates from our classrooms.

With that said, you are always more than welcome to pop into the classroom before or after school if you have any queries or concerns. 

Whilst we endeavour to get back to you promptly, please understand that we are often unable to check these messages until after 3:30pm. If you need an important message to be passed on to your child, we ask that you communicate this via the office (e.g. to advise that your child will be collected early or by another family member). The office will then pass the message on to your child's classroom teacher.

Compass: Compass is the formal tool for communication regarding attendance, payments, excursions, camps, permission forms, school reports, etc.

Please use Compass to advise the school in a timely manner of all student absences.

Early Pick Up: If you need to pick up your child early, please collect them from the office area and be sure to sign them out. You will require an Early Leaver's Pass, provided by the office staff, before we are able to dismiss students.
