Music Camp – What an Experience

Last week, 131 students and teachers dedicated 2½ days to music-making. The Symphonic Band, Gravity Band, Big Band, String Orchestra, String Fusion and Year 7 – 12 vocalists travelled to the beautiful venue, “The Heights” in Belgrave Heights.

There were many highlights. As well as the 11 hours dedicated to rehearsals, students played ga-ga ball, cricket, basketball and table tennis. They completed jigsaw puzzles and played board games. The Talent Show on Saturday night was hilarious as students presented comedy routines, dances and magic tricks in addition to the numerous wonderful music acts.

These are the words of Norah, a Year 7 student;

From the moment I stepped foot into the venue, I knew this music camp was going to be amazing! I have loved music camp every year, but this year was the definitely the best! I benefited so much from the rehearsals, and I was able to learn a lot from the 3 days in Choir and Strings. The food was delicious too! My favourite part of music camp was the talent show, as it was great to see all the students showcase their talents! I can’t wait for next music camp, as it is always a highlight of my year!

The concert for campers’ families demonstrated the success of the concentrated rehearsals. A big thank you to the staff who supported the event, and particularly to Mrs Prue Jury, for her organisation of the program.

Acknowledging Success

In 2025, our Student Executive, led by Performing Arts Captain Carly Bruch with support from staff, presented a vision to the Principal - to recognise and celebrate the extraordinary achievements of our instrumental music students.

Ms FitzSimons embraced this idea, acknowledging the dedication, discipline, and remarkable talent required to reach the highest levels of musical excellence.

It is with great pride that we officially unveiled the Overnewton Music Recognition Board at the Dux Assembly on Monday. The Board is a lasting tribute to Overnewton students who achieve Grade 8 or higher in their chosen instrument – highlighting their perseverance, commitment, and the pursuit of excellence.

The inaugural recipients were Nathan Yuan, who earned a place on the board through the exceptional accomplishment of attaining the prestigious L.Mus.A qualification in Violin - a truly outstanding milestone. He is joined on the board by Year 8 student Phoenix Gill, who has achieved Grade 8 Piano, reflecting both talent and tremendous dedication.

Please join me in congratulating these remarkable students as we unveil the board.

Performances Galore!

Although it’s only Week 3 there have been many performances in addition to those at Music Camp. Rock Band, Radium, performed for at the Canowindra Information Night and again on Tuesday at the Canowindra Welcome Assembly. The Year 3/4 Choir also performed at the Assembly and sang Let’s Sing Together. The College Big Band delighted the parents and teachers at the Yirramboi Information Night. They had also played at the Yirramboi Welcome Assembly. The 2025 Dux, Nathan Yuan, performed at the Dux Assembly on Monday.

We thank our student musicians for their performances and commend them for presenting to such a high standard so early in the year.
