Canowindra Libraries – Starting in Style
Article by Maria Muse, Library Leader, Canowindra Campus
The libraries on Canowindra Campus have been buzzing with activity during the first weeks of 2026.
Year 9 students have been exploring the library hub and borrowing from the range of fiction, high interest non-fiction and magazines which form the collection. This has been especially important this year, as the Year 9s have introduced some new initiatives to their homeroom time. On Thursdays, they participate in Thursday Tales, which encourages them to participate in sustained independent reading.
Research studies over many decades have linked reading for pleasure, also known as recreational reading, with higher academic achievement. These studies show positive associations between recreational reading and cognitive development, academic attainment, comprehension, general knowledge and increased vocabulary. Other studies have also linked recreational reading with higher levels of mental wellbeing.
The Year 9 library hub has a contemporary collection to facilitate this.
The Junior School students have embarked on their weekly library borrowing sessions with enthusiasm. Please ensure that your child brings their library bag to school on their library day. Unfortunately, without a library bag, they are unable to borrow.
Large numbers of Year 3 and 4 students have also been attending the library during lunchtimes. Whether taking a break from the bustle of the playground, exploring our new additions, or sharing a favourite book with a friend, the library is a splendid place to be!
