My name's Zach and from late November 2025 to late January 2026 I had a brilliant opportunity to take part in an exchange to Bavaria, Germany. For two months I had the chance to learn about a new place with my exchange partner, as I had helped her learn interesting things of Australian culture.
My time in Germany was highlighted by new people, a White Christmas, and time in Berlin with the other exchange students. The Berlin excursion was certainly a highlight, with a city tour and free time to explore the city with the other Australian exchange students.

The exchange overall benefitted me as well as my German skills and through the exchange I became a more confident person.
Zach K. (Year 12)
I went to Germany at the end of last year for the exchange program and stayed in Munich. I really enjoyed my time there eating a variety of local delicacies such as bratwurst (sausages), currywurst (curried sausages) and bratkartoffeln (pan-fried potatoes). It was also exciting to see how the cities were covered with decorations, markets and snow during Christmas time.

Overall, from the food to activities such as skiing, the trip was a blast!

The Scholarship for Australian-German Student Exchange (SAGSE) is looking for host families to host students from Germany this year. German students arrive mid-June and stay until mid-August (approx. 10 weeks).
It is a wonderful opportunity to make a strong connection and friendship with a German student with the benefit of moving to the interview stage, if you decide to apply for a SAGSE 10-week scholarship to Germany. Two of our Vermont students successfully received a SAGSE scholarship in the past two years and immensely enjoyed their time overseas.
Australian students do not, however, have to want to travel to Germany in order to host a student from Germany.
