Now that we are nearly halfway through the first term of school some families might be noticing that their young person is starting to show some reluctance to come to school, or for some families you might even find yourself in quite significant battles to help your young person attend school. If this is you, we strongly encourage you to reach out to your student manager or the Well Being team for support and assistance. We know it is not uncommon for parents to mark their young person absent for medical reasons for a number of different reasons their young person is finding it hard to get to school but we encourage you to reach out and let us know and work together with you to help.
School refusal, sometimes called school avoidance or school can't, is not uncommon. It is different to ‘wagging’ or truancy and is often related to worry or anxiety-related issues about going to school. Whilst sometimes periods of transition or change can create or increase school refusal it is a complex issue for which there is rarely a single cause.
Supporting a young person who is finding it hard to get to school creates significant stress and tension for everyone, placing a lot of pressure on families when life can already be difficult enough. Please follow the link to access the SchoolTV edition on School Refusal and as mentioned above please reach out to the school for assistance if you find yourself in worried about how to help your young person to get to school.
