Literacy
The Year 5/6 students have been loving our mentor text! There has been some tears and a lot of eye-opening moments while learning about World War II. The conversations the students are having are getting more in depth and it’s incredible to hear the maturity from them while speaking about this sad part of history.
They have been working really hard on their information reports about Poland, with some of them finishing their pieces already! They have been great to read and we can definitely see some travellers in the future!

Morphology
We have been continuing on with Unit 2 of our Morphology program, last week we learnt the definitions the morphemes:
bio (life) + logy (study of).
bio (life) + graphy (a writing, drawing or picture of).
geo (earth) + logy (study of).
auto (self) + graph (a writing, drawing of picture of).
This week we are learning:
cor (with, together) + rect (to put or keep straight)
di (away, apart) + rect (to put or keep straight)
rect (to put or keep straight) + angle (angle or corner)
e (up, out of) rect (to put or keep straight)
If you want to learn something fun, then ask the students the etymology of these words! And test them on the morphemes over the last couple of weeks, let’s see how much they remember!

Integrated Studies
Wildlife Warriors.
Over the past few weeks the Year 5/6 students have been learning all about different animals and how to protect them. We watched funny videos of animals, which was our highlight (ask them about this), we looked through different photographs, chose our favourite and explained why we chose that one. We also learnt all about different animal adaptations and how and why they adapt to their environments.
The students have started to think about their project at the end of the term, which is getting them excited to help protect animals and raise awareness for them as well. More about our expo will come out at the end of the term so everyone can come and see what they have come up with!

Numeracy
Big Idea 12
BIG IDEA STATEMENT:
RELATIONS & FUNCTIONS: Mathematical rules (relations) can be used to assign members of one set to members of another set. A special rule (function) assigns each member of one set to a unique member of the other set.
Big Idea 13
BIG IDEA STATEMENT:
EQUATIONS & INEQUALITIES: Rules of arithmetic and algebra can be used together with notions of equivalence to transform equations and inequalities so solutions can be found.
After post testing the students on Big Idea 10 last week, we have moved on to Big Ideas 12 and 13! Students have learnt about different types of graphs and what we use them for. They were able to identify the x and y axis and use these to analyse the data that was displayed. The Year 5/6s are able to understand what it means to find the range of a set of numbers as well as the frequency.
This week, the students are learning about the different patterns we might see and will work to identify the rule for these. They will also be putting their BODMAS knowledge to the test, let’s see what our Year 6s remember from last year!
