Year 1/2A – Classroom News
Literacy – Big Red Kangaroo

We’ve been reading Big Red Kangaroo by Claire Saxby as part of our information writing unit. Through our shared reading, students have collected lots of facts about red kangaroos and learnt new words to make their writing more detailed and informative.
We’ve been practising adding describing words to make our sentences more precise (e.g. “long tails” → “long, thick tails”) and joining ideas using and, but and so. We’re now learning to organise information into paragraphs, starting with a clear topic sentence and adding facts that match. These skills will help students as they work towards writing their own information reports.
Maths – Data and Making 20

In Maths, we’ve recently finished our work on collecting, representing and interpreting data. Students gathered information, organised their results and created displays to show what they found. We also discussed what the data told us and answered questions about our results.
We’ve now moved into addition and subtraction, finding different ways to make 20. Students are using number sentences, ten frames and dice games to work out missing numbers, understand that the equals sign means “the same as”, and explain how they solved a problem.
Integrated Studies – Living Things

We’re continuing to learn about the needs of living things, and how animals’ body features and habitats help them survive.
Try at home:
Challenge your child to find different combinations that make 20, e.g. 15 + 5 or 12 + 8. You could also ask them to tell you a fact they’ve learnt about red kangaroos.
