Colourful Chinese fun for the Junior Primary
Our Junior Primary students have been singing, moving, speaking, writing and learning on LanguageNut the names of colours in Chinese! They have been learning and memorising the names of colours, practising their Chinese pronunciation and tones, and having lots of fun singing a catchy colour song with actions.
Students also having a go at writing the characters or Hanzifor the colours. Writing Hanzi encourages students to pay close attention to the shape, structure and stroke order of each character, while also developing their fine motor skills, concentration and attention to detail.
Sing it, say it, move it and write it — that’s how we learn Chinese! 🎵👯♀️
Family in Chinese for the Senior Primary
Our Senior Primary students have been having fun exploring “Family” in Chinese! They discovered that Chinese has special names for family members depending on whether they are from dad’s or mum’s side of the family, and whether they are older or younger. It certainly made our family tree a little more complicated but interesting!
Our Chinese-background students have the opportunity to share their experiences. Some explained that younger siblings are expected to address their older brothers and sisters as “Jie Jie” (姐姐) or “Ge Ge” (哥哥) rather than simply using their names - otherwise, they might quickly hear from Mum or Dad! These real-life stories made our classroom discussions lively and gave everyone a glimpse into how Chinese family traditions is experienced at home.
Students have been practising how to say, recognise and write the Chinese characters/Hanzi for different family members, as well as learning a new rhyme ‘The family rhyme’ to help remember their new vocabulary and practise their pronunciation and tones.
Learning family vocabulary has also provided students with an opportunity to look beyond words and explore an important aspect of Chinese culture and family relationships. They are beginning to appreciate how language reflects the way relationships, age and family connections are valued and expressed in Chinese-speaking communities.
It has been wonderful to see our students sharing, laughing, chanting and learning together while discovering how Chinese language and culture express family relationships. 🌟

The Arts Centre Melbourne is running creative workshops during the upcoming school holidays, designed to connect high-achieving Government school students looking to explore artistic pathways with established artists and industry experts. Academy at Arts Centre Melbourne provides enrichment opportunities in writing, performance, music, dance, design and other creative disciplines to develop students' practical skills, confidence and creative thinking.
