Digital Technologies Leader - Lisa Geary
Cybersafety Week in Digital Technologies
Each term, our Digital Technologies lessons begin with a focus on Cybersafety. Last week, our Year 5/6 students explored the topic of Artificial Intelligence (AI), learning about what AI is and how it can be used responsibly and ethically.
The students shared a wide range of ideas and prior knowledge about AI, and together we discussed the difference between accurate information and common misconceptions. The main focus of the lesson was Generative AI and the ways it can be used safely, positively and fairly.
I was very proud of the mature way the students discussed both the benefits and potential risks of AI. They showed a good awareness of the importance of staying cybersafe and making responsible choices when using digital technologies.
Below are some of the students’ reflections on using AI responsibly, as well as the positive and negative impacts of AI.
Rafe: We can use AI responsibly by using our ideas rather than other ideas and by using our own brain to think about what we want.
Amira: We use AI responsibly by feeding it your OWN data, not just using it for everything you do, like giving it specific tasks. Eg helping to create a birthday poster.
Greta: We can use AI responsibly by making sure the content is original and generating ideas that are helpful not harmful.
Joyce:
Positives:
It helps people design things by creating an idea of what they are going to make.
It is efficient and allows for more time to elaborate and improve something.
Negatives
Since AI is only using information from the internet it can be biased and untrue.
AI can be inaccurate and pull copyrighted information out which you can get called out on if you use and publish it.
Andy:
Positives
AI can be used for medical research.
AI can be used to generate educational information.
Negatives
AI can generate inappropriate images.
AI can produce inaccurate information.
Francesca:
Positives:
Helps to put together information.
Creates ideas for stories, scripts etc.
Negatives
Can build harmful or hurtful content.
Can use others ideas without crediting them.
