Year 3-6 Literacy
This term, our Year 5/6 students will be reading Tom Appleby: Convict Boy by Jackie French as part of their literacy learning. It is a historical novel set in the early days of colonial Australia.
It follows a young boy, Tom Appleby, who is unfairly transported from England to Australia as a convict. The story explores his journey on the convict ship and his struggle to survive in a harsh and unfamiliar new land.
Along the way, Tom experiences the realities of convict life - strict rules, hard labour, and injustice, but also forms friendships and begins to build a new life. The book highlights themes of resilience, fairness, courage, and what it means to belong.
You might like to ask your 5/6 child:
”What have you learned about Tom’s life so far, and how is it different from your life today?”
Our Year 3/4 students have been engaging with the text ‘Off We Go Around Australia’ by Roland Harvey. It takes readers on a journey across Australia, exploring a wide range of landscapes, communities, and experiences. Through its lively narrative, the book introduces students to the diversity of Australian life, from coastal regions to the outback, highlighting both natural environments and human activity.
It is a valuable text for building comprehension and extending knowledge of Australia’s geography and culture. It supports the development of vocabulary, encourages students to make connections between places, and provides opportunities for rich discussion and written responses. The journey structure also helps students follow a sequence of events and deepen their understanding of how people live in different parts of our country.
You might like to ask your Year 3/4 child:“What part of Australia in the book would you most like to visit, and why?”
Both Off We Go Around Australia by Roland Harvey and Tom Appleby: Convict Boy by Jackie French connect closely to our Inquiry unit, My Story, Your Story, Our Story.
These texts help students explore how people’s experiences are shaped by time, place, and culture. Tom Appleby offers insight into Australia’s past, while Off We Go Around Australia highlights the country’s cultural and geographical diversity today. Together, they support students in understanding how individual stories contribute to our shared story.
Prep-2 InitiaLit
Our Prep - Year 2 teachers have recently completed training in InitiaLit, an evidence-based literacy program, and are now beginning to implement this into their classrooms. This marks an exciting step for our school as we strengthen our approach to teaching reading and writing in the early years.
Families who attended our Student Learning in Action session on Friday may have seen a small snapshot of this learning. We look forward to sharing more as the program becomes embedded and students continue to build their skills and confidence as readers and writers.
For more information about the InitiaLit program, we warmly invite you to attend our parent information session at 9:00am on Wednesday 27 May 2026.
