The Walert group have been busy investigating the changes that Waring season (on the Wurundjeri seasonal calendar) have brought to the kindergarten yard. We have been noticing the condensation, falling leaves and changing temperatures most of all. Outdoors, the children have been busy painting rocks in the creek with water and adding them to buckets as they investigate objects that sink and float. Indoors, our sensory play table combines children’s love of rock painting with the colour mixing experiments that are ongoing at the painting easels. There is so much STEM learning involved in these experiences! The children have begun experimenting with soft wire, a material that can be bent into so many interesting shapes. The wire is perfect for threading small pony beads onto, and this supports children's fine motor development and persistence, as well as creativity. These are all great skills and dispositions for learning! The baby hospital has become a veterinary clinic over the past few weeks and both areas have inspired some great imaginary play with a lot of rich descriptive language and opportunities to practice sharing, problem solving and negotiation. There is so much learning that happens through play!
