 3/4 CLASSROOM

Over the past few weeks, the Grade 3/4 students have been busy across all learning areas.

In Reading and Writing, we began our new class novel, Uncle Xbox. Students explored new vocabulary after reading the text, with recent focus words including streaming, slunk and nudging. We have also been completing sentence writing tasks, focusing on expanding our sentences with adjectives to make our writing more detailed and engaging. Students recently completed their explanatory writing pieces about how kangaroos jump, including labelled diagrams to support and enhance their explanations. In Spelling, we have been learning and practicing the “drop the e” spelling rule.

In Maths, students have started learning about fractions. We have been recognising, representing and counting halves, quarters and thirds, as well as exploring fractions of shapes and collections. Students have been using double-sided counters, connector blocks, and playing games such as Fraction Dominoes and Fraction Bingo to support their learning.

In RE, students have been exploring the Circle of Life and discussing how the Gospel reflects themes of loss, grief, relief, joy and difficult times, all seasons of life. Students have explored these themes through creative drawings.

In Art, students explored the question, “What makes something art?” and discussed how different people enjoy different styles of art. We looked at the abstract artwork of Australian artist Ken Done. Students enjoyed creating their own abstract artworks and challenged themselves to create pieces that were expressive rather than “perfect.”

In Inquiry, students have been learning about different habitats and biomes around the world.

We are very proud of all students who participated in the St Mary’s Cross Country last Friday. Congratulations to all students who achieved 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in their events. A special well done to our Year 4 students who competed in their very first interschool cross country event, and congratulations to the students who will be progressing to the next level.
