Sounds Write
Our Prep students have now been taught all 26 letter sounds and how to correctly form each letter. It has been wonderful to see the progress they are making in reading and writing, with students now independently writing short sentences. We have enjoyed writing about familiar book characters we read about at home, including Pam the dog, Sid the cat, Dan and Tim. In our writing lessons, students have been focusing on using capital letters, finger spaces and full stops correctly, while also learning to place their letters neatly on a single line.
Nursery Rhymes and Fairy Tales
In the classroom, we continued to explore nursery rhymes and developed our understanding of rhyming words. Students engaged with a variety of familiar and favourite nursery rhymes, and built on their confidence with recognising and creating rhymes. We then moved onto learning about Fairy Tales. We talked about the characters, settings, events, problem and solution. Our Fairy Tales unit of work focused on 'Little Red Riding Hood', The Three Little
Pigs and soon 'Goldilocks and the 3 Bears'. Students drew story maps, analysed story elements and character traits and actions. We also compared different versions of the fairy tales by identifying similarities and differences in morals, characters, and narrators. Look out next time for our session with Celeste from the Hastings Library! She will visit our school for the National Simultaneous Storytime.
Mathematics: Length
In recent Mathematics lessons, students have been learning about measuring length using informal units. Students used Unifix blocks to measure and compare a variety of objects around the classroom, developing their understanding of longer, shorter and equal lengths. Through hands-on activities, students practised counting accurately and recording their measurements while building confidence in using mathematical language.
Science
In our Science lessons, students have continued their learning in Physical Science by exploring light, sound and heat energy, and investigating how these are produced and experienced through our senses. Students have enjoyed learning about natural, man-made and reflective light sources through hands-on activities and discussions. As part of this learning, students designed and created their own lanterns, demonstrating their creativity and understanding of different light sources. Next our lessons will focus on how sound is made.
Special Events:
Mother's Day
Students loved choosing a special brooch to give to their mums for Mother’s Day. They also did a fabulous job creating drawings and writing about their mums, putting lots of care and thought into their work. It was wonderful to see their creativity and excitement as they prepared their special gifts.
Education Week: Grandparents/Special Persons Afternoon
Our Education Week event was a wonderful opportunity for students to share their learning with their grandparents and special visitors. Students proudly showed examples of their work, enjoyed completing a colouring activity together and joined the whole school assembly. During the assembly, we celebrated our school values and students performed and signed the song We Are One, making it a very special afternoon for our school community.
