Year 3/4A

Year 3/4 Classroom Update

Students in Year 3/4 have continued their engaging unit of work on Ancient Greece, with a strong focus on building their reading comprehension, research and information writing skills. As part of this learning, students have commenced planning and writing their own information reports based on aspects of Ancient Greek civilisation. Throughout the unit, students have been using Ancient Greece and the Olympics by Mary Pope Osborne and Meet the Greeks by James Davies as primary source texts to support their research and understanding. Students have explored important features of information reports, including headings, subheadings, topic-specific vocabulary, factual language and paragraph structure. The purpose of this learning is to develop students’ ability to locate, organise and communicate information clearly and effectively, while also deepening their understanding of an important historical civilisation and its influence on the modern world.

In Mathematics, students have been studying 3D shapes, with a particular focus on identifying and describing faces, edges and vertices. Students have explored a range of three-dimensional objects and investigated how these geometric features help classify and describe different shapes. Alongside this, students have also been learning about various polygons and prisms, developing their mathematical vocabulary and understanding of geometric properties. Through hands-on activities and investigations, students have been encouraged to recognise how geometric concepts appear in everyday life and the world around them.

Students are now commencing a new Mathematics unit focused on place value into the millions. Through this unit, students will develop their understanding of how our number system is organised and how the value of digits changes depending on their position within a number. Students will practise reading, writing, ordering and partitioning large numbers, while building confidence when working with increasingly complex numerical concepts. The purpose of this learning is to strengthen students’ overall number sense and provide a strong foundation for future mathematical problem-solving.

In Civics and Citizenship, students have been exploring the three levels of government in Australia and the responsibilities of each level. Students have discussed the role of local, state and federal governments, and how these organisations work together to support communities and create laws. As part of this learning, students have also investigated the concept ofFederation in Australia, examining how the nation was formed and why Federation was important in shaping modern Australia. Students have further explored how laws are created and why rules and laws are necessary within society.

Additionally, students have been learning about ways we can remain safe within the community and the important role that police play in protecting the public and enforcing laws. Through class discussions and activities, students have considered how laws help maintain fairness and safety, while also developing an appreciation for the responsibilities of community services such as the police. These learning experiences aim to support students in becoming informed, responsible and active members of the community.
