Grade 5/6 Classroom Update
This week in the Grade 5/6 classroom, our focus has shifted towards assessment and gathering evidence to support student reporting. As a result, there is not a great deal of new curriculum content to report on this week, as much of our class time has been dedicated to completing a range of assessment tasks across learning areas.
Assessment plays an important role in helping teachers understand each student’s progress, identify strengths, and determine areas where further support or extension may be needed. Throughout the week, students have been working hard to demonstrate their understanding, apply the skills they have developed, and show their learning across a variety of subjects.
While testing can sometimes feel challenging, our students have approached these tasks with maturity, resilience, and determination, and we are incredibly proud of the effort they have shown.
We look forward to sharing more curriculum-focused learning updates in the coming weeks as we move back into our regular teaching and learning programs. Thank you, as always, for your continued support of our Grade 5/6 learners.
Mother’s Day
On Thursday the 7th of May we had our Mother’s Day Afternoon in the BER building. We had lots of great activities such as Mini Table Tennis, Precision Bounce, Quoits and lots of coloring in sheets. The playroom was also open so that people could play. Mrs. Berthet played nice music for people to dance to and enjoy. There was delicious food for the mothers to eat and the whole school made pot plants with Brenda and Mrs. Berthet.

Cross Country
On the 30th of April the whole school participated in house cross country. After recess the year 3/4 and 5/6 students were ready to race. The 3/4 students lined up at the starting line. The year 3/4 were running 2km and the 5/6 were running 3km. The map of the cross country went around the Myers Reserve oval, across the road, around the forest, through the side gate, around the green shed and MPR, through the walk way, around the school oval and back to the reserve.
The year 3/4 students ran 2 laps of that and the year 5/6 students ran 2 laps of that and another lap of the Myers Reserve oval. After the races we played games of soccer. Each of the houses played against each other.
Later we went to our oval and joined in the junior cross country. After that we all had lunch together on the oval. The ribbon presentation was after lunch.
Some of our senior school students are now going to district. We wish them the best of luck there.

Melbourne Symphony Orchestra
On Friday, 8th May, our Grade 6 students enjoyed an exciting excursion to the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, where they experienced a wonderful performance inspired by the popular game The Legend of Zelda.
After arriving in the city, they were dropped off near the art museum at Federation Square, where they enjoyed a quick snack before taking in some of Melbourne’s iconic landmarks. Along the way, we spotted the famous Flinders Street Station clocks, the historic Young & Jackson Hotel (which is haunted by a ghost called Cleo), and St Paul’s Cathedral.
We then made our way to Hamer Hall, where many other schools were already lined up outside. Once inside, students found their seats and watched as the musicians prepared on stage. Then Beethoven came on the news, that was shown by a projector on the wall behind the musicians, talking about the game.
The performance was an incredible experience, featuring five musical pieces inspired by The Legend of Zelda. We were impressed by the range of instruments, including trumpets, violas, violins, and harp, all coming together to create a truly memorable performance.
It was a fantastic opportunity for us to experience live orchestral music in such an iconic venue, and the excursion was thoroughly enjoyed by all. After the performance, we returned to the bus and headed back to school, full of excitement from a wonderful day in Melbourne.

District Cross Country
On the 21st of May 2026 some of our senior students went to represent Bittern Primary School at the Hastings foreshore to compete in the District Cross Country. When we got there, we sat down under the school tent which the teachers had been setting up. The first race was for the 11-year-old boys at 10:00am. Then the 11-year-old girls ran. Our year fives all ran on the day, and each did a really good job.
The next set of races included the 10-year-old boys and girls. Bittern got a variety of scores in the races, and all of our students did a great job.
Next the races include our 12-year-old boys and girls who all did their very best. Bittern had a very successful day, and we want to give a special shout out to Alana who came first in her age group, and all our racers who worked hard to achieve their personal bests. Mrs. Berthet did an outstanding job organising such a fun day.
We wish Alana the best of luck at the next stage, which is Division Cross Country.
