Middle Group News

Our middle group have recently begun an engaging unit during their literacy sessions, where they are creating digital media presentations on topics of personal interest. This project encourages curiosity and independence, as students research, plan, and design presentations that reflect their ideas and creativity. Along the way, they are building valuable skills in critical thinking, organisation, and digital literacy, while learning how to communicate information in clear and visually engaging ways. We look forward to seeing the wide range of topics and the creativity our students bring to their final presentations.
Alongside this, the middle students have been working hard in their numeracy sessions, by strengthening their mental maths skills through regular practice with a range of number strategies. They are building confidence and fluency by solving problems mentally, thinking flexibly with numbers, and selecting efficient strategies to support accurate problem-solving. Students will also be focusing on developing practical money skills, including recognising the value of coins and notes, calculating totals, and working with real-life money situations.
We have a super exciting announcement as well, our new Project Time class has students running their own café! They will be serving smoothies and milkshakes to staff and peers. Through creating unique flavours and managing the café, students are developing valuable real-life skills, including teamwork, communication, problem-solving, and customer service.

Art
The art room has been busy this term with our typical wide range of creative projects. Students created plaster island models based on the novel "Lord of the Flies", focusing on structure and layout. Others completed paint pour canvases and worked on Indigenous flag colour pours to be used on outdoor tables and benches. Students also produced individual canvas pieces based on their own ideas. Other activities included tin foil sculpting to explore form and texture, and spray paint street art, introducing basic techniques and safe use of materials. Across all tasks, students have been building skills in planning, following processes, and working independently while completing projects from start to finish.

Food Technology
This term, in Food Technology, students have been focusing on nutrition; they have been learning the ins and outs of things like carbs and protein, and we have been supporting students to plan and create healthy meals. Throughout the term, students have enjoyed preparing a variety of recipes, including KFC-style sliders, burritos, carbonara and chorizo-based dishes. We have loved watching the students further their learning and become more skilled in the kitchen.

Physical Education
In PE this term, students have been continuing to develop confidence in participation and having fun in a variety of activities. Core classes are further refining their overhand throwing technique and beginning to explore the fundamental motor skill of the catch.
Each class will focus on a different sport depending on the interest of the class, ensuring everyone has a chance to participate in engaging sessions. We have also been utilising the Morwell Leisure Centre facilities which has allowed us to increase the variety of activities we have been able to offer in P.E. These excursions to the leisure centre have been really well enjoyed, and students have been eager to get back there more often. We will continue our trips to the leisure centre throughout this term, especially as the weather begins to turn cold and wet.
In our elective classes, we have continued engaging with the gym program; they are getting more comfortable with the space, equipment and exercises. We will also introduce concepts such as progressive overload to help our students deepen their understanding of personal development concepts.
Other classes have seen students participate in bike rides exploring local riding tracks around Morwell. This has been a great opportunity to find little hidden gems around Morwell where we can enjoy a short break in between our rides. Students have been really engaged in these sessions, and we have been impressed with students' perseverance whilst riding around the hills of Morwell.
