📘 The Importance of Regular School Attendance

At Fitzroy Primary School, we know that every day of learning matters. The Victorian Department of Education emphasises that regular attendance helps children build strong learning habits, develop friendships, and stay connected to their school community.

We also understand that at this time of year, children do get sick, and staying home when unwell is the right thing to do. Your child’s health—and the health of others—always comes first.

However, when children are well enough to attend, coming to school consistently makes a big difference. Missing even one day a fortnight adds up to four full weeks of lost learning across a year.

Why attendance matters

  • Learning builds day by day—each lesson connects to the next.
  • Routines support wellbeing—regular attendance helps children feel settled and confident.
  • Friendships grow through daily connection—being at school helps children feel included.
  • Teachers can support students best when they are present and engaged in classroom learning.

When your child is unwell

If your child is sick, please keep them home to rest and recover. When they return, we will help them catch up on key learning.

If your child needs to be away for any other reason, please let us know as soon as possible so we can support their learning and wellbeing.

How families can help

  • Establish a consistent morning routine.
  • Aim for appointments outside school hours where possible.
  • Let us know early if your child is experiencing challenges with attendance—we’re here to help.
  • Submit absence notifications through Compass or by contacting the office.
