Kalinda Library Term 4 news
Library end-of-year dates
‘Overdue book’ notices will be sent home with your child in week 5 of this term, and again in week 9.
The final date for borrowing this year will be Friday 27th November.
All books (including from home) must be returned to the library by Friday December 11th.
Year 5/6 ‘Book Tasting’
Earlier in the year, the Year 5/6s participated in a ‘book-tasting’ event in the library. During their regular library session, students could sit themselves at a table and sample, or ‘taste,’ a number of books in a particular genre or style. They were encouraged to read the blurb, the first page, and a random page from the middle of the book, to get a feel for the genre and writing style. Students then ranked the books from 0 stars (I am not at all interested) to 5 stars (I would really love to read this). After 5 minutes at one table, or ‘course’, students would move on to another course.
The tables/courses were:
- Entree - ‘quick reads’.
- Main - ‘real life, real facts’.
- Side dish - ‘fantasy and magic’.
- Palate cleanser - ‘humour’.
- Dessert - ‘mystery & adventure’.
- Chef’s special - ‘weird and wonderful’.
After all classes came through (and after a lot of tallying!), the 10 most popular books were:
- The Alchemyst - Michael Scott
- I Survived…the Black Death - Lauren Tarshis
- The Grandest Bookshop in the World - Amelia Mellor
- Gone to the Woods - Gary Paulsen
- Skandar & the Unicorn Thief - A.F. Steadman
- The Girl Who Drank the Moon - Kelly Barnhill
- The Playbook - Kwame Alexander
- Do You Dare? 1854: Eureka Boys - Penny Matthews
- Funny Kid - Matt Stanton
- Into the Blue - Cristy Burne
All of these books (and many other 4* and 5* books) will be made available to the grade 5/6s to borrow this term.
