STUDENTS OF THE WEEK

Y5 update

Reading: Students are exploring how different texts communicate points of view. They are analysing the purpose, audience and structure of multimodal and written texts, identifying emotive language and examining how authors use evidence, examples and different voices to influence the reader. Students are also comparing how texts present similar or different points of view and using evidence from the texts to support their thinking.

Writing: Students have almost completed their first information report and have now begun planning and researching for the next information report. This time, they will select a different habitat and animal, providing an opportunity to apply and demonstrate the information report writing skills they have developed. We will also focus on addressing misconceptions identified during the moderation of their first reports, helping students strengthen their writing and achieve greater success in their second information report.

Numeracy: Our focus has now shifted to the division section of our Multiplicative Thinking sequence, with students exploring division as the inverse operation of multiplication. They are learning to solve division problems using short division without and with renaming, including calculations with remainders, and explain what the remainder represents. Students are also exploring how remainders can be expressed as fractions and decimals, while using multiplication and addition to check their answers and justify their mathematical thinking. Students ready for extension are applying their understanding of place value to divide decimal numbers by one-digit numbers, including renaming between ones, tenths and hundredths.

Inquiry: Our visit to the zoo has provided students with valuable knowledge about animals and the adaptations they make to survive in their habitats. Students also participated in an engaging workshop exploring the identification and relationship between predators and prey. They have now begun planning their 3D rainforest habitat dioramas, where they will focus on a specific habitat and the animals that live within it. Through this project, students will apply their understanding of habitats, animal adaptations and survival to create a detailed model that demonstrates their learning. This learning will also complement our Information Report writing, as students use their research and knowledge to develop informative texts about their chosen habitat and animals.

Wellbeing: Students have been setting personal goals to help them become more independent learners, reflecting on which strategies will work best to achieve their goals. We are also looking forward to R U OK? Day next week, where students will explore the importance of checking in with others, showing kindness and supporting the wellbeing of those around them.
