This week a large number of the MCC Wellbeing Team attended the headspace Griffith consortium.

Youth week event HYPE (Helping Young People Evolve). Held at the Griffith Community Centre students had the opportunity to participate in a range of activities being facilitated by a range of local service providers. Activities were held both indoors and directly outside the centre and ranged from drumbeat, CBT games to enhance wellbeing, basketball shoot out, to more informative based activities such as resume writing skills, and the importance of connectiveness when emotions are running high. Conducted on a rotation basis students were given the opportunity to choose which group they would like to participate in as well as take the opportunity to network with other young people from a range of local schools and local service providers. The students also had a chance to explore the support available from CUC (Country University Centre) and receive the latest information in regard to vaping and become more aware of the negative implications of gambling.

Most activities were interactive so not only were the participants increasing their awareness they had fun whilst doing so with many students stepping outside of their comfort zone.

In addition, there was also time available for the young people to explore and communicate with the many agencies that had information and resource stations at the event.

The feedback from the students was very positive and it is hoped that some of the activities, skills and knowledge gained can be shared with more of the MCC community next term when the team have the opportunity to facilitate Stress Down Day activities.

At this week’s final meeting for the term the team had the opportunity to reflect upon all that they had achieved and start planning for term 2. Already there are 3 significant events that are built into our annual MCC calendar and the students are already thinking how they can create the events to reflect their perspective on wellbeing and positive mental health and what their legacy will be as a team.

I would personally like to thank the team for their contribution and commitment to enhancing wellbeing within the school and look forward to what they showcase in term 2.

This week as a school community we have come together to support those who have experienced personal tragedy and this may have escalated or triggered different emotions for many people. Please do not hesitate to reach out for support if you have concerns about your child’s wellbeing now or in the future. Festive occasions such as Easter can also be a time when we can feel quite emotional as we reflect upon those who are no longer with us. Grief is a personal journey and has no time limits but it is a journey that does not have to be taken without support.

I know that you are struggling.

Finally, I would like to wish everyone a happy Easter and for those who may be travelling a safe journey. I hope that everyone enjoys the holiday period and has the opportunity to relax, rejuvenate and return to term 2 refreshed and revitalised.
