Year 3/4 - Newsletter

Dear Parents & Guardians,

We have made it to the end of Term 1 and what a wonderful term it has been. We would once again like to congratulate all of our Year 3 students for participating in and completing their first ever NAPLAN assessments.

Some of our highlights in Term 1 include; Swimming Carnival, Neurodiversity and Harmony Week and Cross country.

What's happened this week?

Literacy

Our final two weeks of Literacy have seen us finish reading our class novel, The One & Only Ivan, followed by watching the film adaptation. The experience sparked lots of thoughtful discussion and reflection among students.

Throughout this time, students made strong connections between the text and the film, comparing key events, characters and themes, and sharing their opinions on how the story was portrayed in each format. These conversations supported their understanding of author purpose and audience impact.

Each class also finalised their Persuasive Writing assessment. Students worked hard to plan, draft, edit and publish their pieces, demonstrating their ability to structure arguments, use persuasive language techniques, and support their ideas with evidence. It has been fantastic to see the growth in confidence and writing skills across all students.

Mathematics

Our recent Mathematics lessons have focused on completing post-assessments, allowing students to demonstrate their learning and growth from the current unit. These assessments have provided valuable insight into individual progress and areas of strength.

We have also begun pre-assessments in preparation for our upcoming Number unit next term, which will focus on Additive Thinking. This will support our planning to ensure lessons are targeted at each student’s point of need, setting them up for success as we move into this key area of Mathematics.

Inquiry – ‘Who Wants to be a Mayor?’

This week, students proudly finalised their ‘Three Levels of Government’ Triarama, which has now been sent home for display. It has been a fantastic unit, with students developing a strong understanding of the difference between rules and laws, as well as exploring the roles, responsibilities, and structures of Federal, State, and Local Government.

We are now looking ahead with excitement to next term’s Inquiry unit, What Makes a Design go Bang!?, where students will explore the world of inventions, design processes, and innovative thinking.

Reminders

Fidget Tools

We understand some children’s learning and focus are supported by these and they have been a strategy recommended by an Allied Health professional, and we support this. If this is the case for your child, can you please let us know.

For our students that just like to have a fidget toy, if they are not supporting their focus and learning we will encourage them to use them at recess and lunch times. Please note, fidget tools should be small and non-distracting (slime is NOT allowed at school). Thank you for your understanding.

Hats

As we move into Terms 2 and 3, students are no longer required to wear hats at school. Hats can remain at home during these cooler months, and we will notify families when they are needed again in Term 4.
