Year 4 Musical

The Year 4 students have been working hard in their final rehearsals for the Musical A Dog’s Tale. The students performed a dress rehearsal today to an audience of grandparents, with a Matinee performance for the Primary school and an evening show for families taking place on Monday 17 August.

Music Eisteddfod – Winners’ Concerts

Congratulations to the hundreds of John XXIII Music students who performed in the 2026 Music Eisteddfod! Over two wonderful days of performances in strings, winds, guitars, percussion, voice, piano, ensembles, and composition, students competed for the House Music Shield, the winner of which will be announced at an upcoming assembly.

Adjudicators in all categories noted the remarkable standard of performances, preparation, confidence and courage from our students!

Winners of the House Spirit and Outstanding Performer awards have been notified by email, with medals and trophies presented at Winners’ Concerts on Thursday, 20 August.

• Secondary Winners’ Concert – 6:30pm – GBLT

   

As these events are catered, we appreciate it when families notify the Music Office of their attendance.

Music Tour 2027 – Expressions of Interest

Parents are invited to complete the following form, to express student/s interest in auditioning for the Music Tour to New Zealand in 2027: Rhapsody Rotorua 2027 .

The following students are eligible to audition:

• Current Wind Band members in Year 8 and above, current Concert Band members,
• Current Treble Choir members in Year 9, current Chamber Choir members

• Current Chamber Orchestra members in Year 8 and above.

   

Audition information will be sent to eligible students in the coming weeks.

St George's Cathedral, Concerts at One 

It was wonderful to bring John XXIII College's musicians into the heart of the city last week, performing as part of St George's Cathedral's Concerts at One series.

Chamber Choir, Barbershop, Senior Voices, Senior Clarinet Ensemble, Senior String Quartet, Senior Saxophone Ensemble, Year 10 Cello Trio, Year 9 Flute Duo and our ATAR Soloists all took to the stage, filling the Cathedral with beautiful music for a lunchtime audience of staff, students, families and city visitors.

Thank you to St George's Cathedral for hosting us, and to our talented students and staff for such a memorable performance.

JTC students light up The Ellington 

Some of our most talented musicians took the stage at The Ellington Jazz Club for a night of standards, swing and soul.

Across two sets, students showed off serious range, from the tight harmonies of Barbershop & Senior Voices and the Senior Saxophone Ensemble's Motown groove, to solo performances from Phoebe and Alina, and the Senior String Quartet's take on ‘El Tango de Roxane.’ The Small Combo brought the jazz standards (Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock), while our Junior Swing Band and Swing Band closed things out with everything from ‘Twist and Shout’ to Chick Corea's ‘Spain.’

A brilliant showcase of the depth of talent in our music program — huge congratulations to every student who performed, and thank you to our music staff for getting them stage-ready.

Chapel Choir

Chapel Choir is open to all Years 1 to 12 students who love singing, with a focus on liturgical music. Rehearsals commence at 7:30am in the Chapel with Ms Haydon and Mr Johnston on Fridays. Chapel Choir then sings at Community Mass (commencing at 8:00am). Secondary students who sing in the choir may include this time in their Roncalli Service hours.
