From the Principal

At Swinburne Senior Secondary College, our values of Respect, Responsibility and Commitment are at the heart of our community. They shape the way we learn together, support one another and create a school where every student feels a sense of belonging, purpose and opportunity.

These values are evident in the everyday experiences of our students. We see respect in initiatives such as Wear It Purple Day, which promote inclusion and belonging and help ensure all members of our community feel valued and supported. We see responsibility in students such as Maggie Mason, whose commitment to learning, leadership and community was recognised through the prestigious Marrung Education Scholarship. We see commitment in the dedication of Renae Derbyshire and Thomas Huxtable, who will represent our college in the Victorian State Schools Spectacular, alongside the many students who share their talents through our Music Performance Evenings.

This week, I had the privilege of seeing authentic examples of these values in action across the college. In Psychology, Food Studies, Art Creative Practice, Product Design, Music, Theatre Studies and Literature, students collaborated thoughtfully, challenged and supported one another's thinking, and engaged deeply in their learning. Through these experiences, they develop not only subject knowledge and skills, but also the confidence, empathy and resilience needed to navigate an increasingly complex world.

Students and staff also recently celebrated National Science Week, exploring the excitement and possibilities that science offers. These activities encouraged curiosity, inquiry and critical thinking while highlighting the role science plays in innovation, addressing real-world challenges and opening pathways to a diverse range of future study and career opportunities.

Learning continues to extend beyond the classroom. Our Year 12 English students recently attended a performance of Sunset Boulevard, providing an opportunity to engage with live theatre and deepen their understanding of the texts and themes explored in class. Our Student Representative Council has also continued to make a positive contribution to school life, and we have begun reviewing our student leadership structures as part of planning for 2027 to ensure student voice remains meaningful, inclusive and representative.

We are also proud to celebrate the achievements of our students. At the Premier's VCE Awards Ceremony, Ella Rule received a Premier's VCE Award for Ancient History and Maia Clisby de la Piedad received a Premier's VCE Award for Philosophy, placing them among Victoria's highest-achieving VCE students. Their success reflects the dedication, curiosity and commitment to learning that we value so highly at Swinburne.

Alongside celebrating student achievement, we remain committed to continuous improvement. Our middle leaders have been participating in the Victorian Academy of Teaching and Leadership's Leading School Improvement and Inspiring School Pride and Confidence programs, strengthening leadership capability and supporting our ongoing work to enhance learning outcomes and opportunities for all students.

Together, these examples remind us that a great school is built not only on achievement, but on relationships, belonging and shared purpose. Every day, our students bring their talents, perspectives and passions to our community, helping to create a culture that is inclusive, creative and supportive. We are grateful for the contributions they make to school life and proud of the kindness, curiosity and generosity they show towards one another.

These qualities continue to make Swinburne Senior Secondary College a place where everyone can feel valued, connected and inspired to grow.
