Child Safe Standard 8: Staff receive ongoing training to keep children safe

Child Safe Standard 8 requires schools to ensure staff are equipped with knowledge, skills and awareness to keep children and young people safe through ongoing education and training.

For a school to be compliant with Child Safe Standard 8 they must meet these minimum requirements:

  • Staff are trained and supported to effectively implement the organisations Child Safety and Wellbeing Policy.

  • Staff receive training and information to recognise indicators of child harm including harm caused by other children and young people.

  • Staff receive training and information to respond effectively to issues of child safety and wellbeing and support colleagues who disclose harm.

  • Staff receive training and information on how to build culturally safe environments for children and young people.

Staff members at the College partake in 20 hours of mandatory Professional Learning each year to ensure their skills are kept up to date and they are equipped to deal with children and young people effectively. This aids staff members adhering to the College's Child Safety and Wellbeing Policy.

Twice a year the Principal will conduct a briefing with all staff to remind them about their duties in relation to reportable conduct and what processes to follow if they have any concerns in relation to a child's safety or wellbeing.

Both campuses also have a dedicated MARAM (Multi-Agency Risk Assessment Management) Officer. Every Victorian school is required to have an Officer to aid in supporting family violence screening and making referrals and reports. These Officers assist members of the wellbeing team in identifying and supporting vulnerable students. These same Officers are also trained in de-escalation techniques which can be utilised during their daily duties. These techniques are shared with other members of staff so difficult situations can be handled effectively or even prevent some situations from escalating.
