Every day St Peter's students find refuge in the cosy library as the freezing winds blow outside and one classic novel comes to mind – Jack London’s “Call of the Wild” where the Canadian Klondike winter is not merely a season but a cold grey force. 

“Call of the Wild” follows Buck, a domesticated dog who enjoys a privileged life in sunny California then suddenly is stolen and thrust into a brutal world of a sled dog in the frozen north of Canada. The wilderness where Buck finds himself is a place of heartless silence with wolves howling all night long and the days are full of gruelling labour. 

Eventually a kind character called John Thornton rescues Buck from brutal treatment bringing him back to good health while forming a strong bond. Sadly when Thornton dies the grieving Buck feels the ‘call’ of his ancestors drawing him to the wilderness where he is accepted as the leader of a wild wolf pack. Jack London explores many themes such the struggle for survival as well as the code of conduct between civilization and the wild.
