WPS Students and Staff and 110 Years of Scouting
Last Friday evening, our school was invited to attend the 1st Whittlesea Scout Group Annual Report and Awards Presentation (ARAP). The 1st Whittlesea Scout Group was first registered with Scouts Victoria in 1916. This year, almost to the day, marks the group’s 110th anniversary, a remarkable milestone celebrating more than a century of Scouting and community connection in Whittlesea.
The Whittlesea Scout and Guide Hall in Fir Street was built in 1976 through the generous donations of the Goding and Howe families, and with the support of many other families throughout the Whittlesea township. The hall has since stood as an important part of the local community, providing generations of young people with a place to learn, grow, build friendships and develop the skills and confidence that are at the heart of Scouting.
Some of the early memories of the 1st Whittlesea Scout Group were shared at the presentation evening by long-time Whittlesea local, Ian Goding, whose association with the Group began in 1955 when he became involved with Cubs and Scouts.
At the time, the group’s meetings were held at the RSL Town Hall in Church Street, Whittlesea, which stood on the corner where ‘Hotch Potch’ and the Commonwealth Bank now stand. Owned by the Christ Church, Whittlesea at the time, the hall was an important gathering place within the township. It featured a stage and dressing rooms and was regularly used for community concerts, dances and balls.
For Ian, the Scout Group became much more than a childhood activity. His connection with 1st Whittlesea has continued for an extraordinary 71 years, spanning generations of Scouting and reflecting the strong connections between the group, local families and the wider Whittlesea community.
Ian’s own family has played a significant role in the history of Scouting, with several family members going on to become actively involved in the movement. His story is therefore, not only a personal recollection, but part of a much broader family and community legacy that has helped sustain Scouting in Whittlesea for generations.
Today, that legacy continues, with current Whittlesea Primary School students and staff involved in the 1st Whittlesea Scout Group. These connections highlight the enduring relationship between our school, our families and the broader Whittlesea community.
As we celebrate 110 years of the 1st Whittlesea Scout Group, it is wonderful to see that the values of community, belonging, friendship, learning and leadership continue to be embraced by generations of young people, including many of our own WPS students. We look forward to continuing to celebrate and strengthen these community connections into the future.

It’s that time of year again! From now until the end of Term 2, 2027, our SunSmart Policy requires all staff and primary school-aged students to wear a hat when outdoors, either during play, PE or outdoor learning.
On high UV days, students will also be encouraged to apply sunscreen. If your child is sensitive to sunscreen, please send an appropriate sunscreen from home in their school bag.
Wide-brimmed and bucket hats are available for purchase from Uniform Group in Craigieburn.
Thank you for helping us keep our students safe and sun smart!
