Grade 2

Welcome back to a new school year!

In Grade 2, our students have been enjoying the Setting Up for Success program. They have explored who they are, what they have in common with others and what makes them unique. Each class has created a set of expectations and a class goal to work towards throughout the year. Students have also investigated what makes a good friend and have been building positive relationships with both teachers and peers.

As part of this, students have begun Friendology, exploring their Inner Ninja (the superpower strengths they bring to friendships) and learning about True Colours to help them understand and manage big emotions.

We were lucky to have Kiah from The Cyber Safety Project visit us to talk about staying safe online. Students learned what to do if they are feeling worried, sad or anxious about something they see online. They were introduced to the STOP strategy: Stay Silent, Tell an Adult, Out – get out of the game and Play something else.

In English, students have been establishing routines for the Reading and Writing Workshop, learning what good readers and writers do and working through the writing process. They have also begun our new Phonics Plus program, revising sounds, reading and spelling words, practising fluency, handwriting, modelled sentences and dictation. This aligns with the Victorian Curriculum’s phonics focus and supports daily review for reading success.

In Mathematics, students have been developing their number knowledge through games, hands-on materials and exploring our maths resources as tools for learning. They have been solving addition problems using problem-solving strategies and have begun collecting data about classmates’ family backgrounds and birthdays, representing this information in graphs to show their understanding.
