Grade 1

General

The Grade 1 students have made a wonderful start to the year, settling confidently into their new classrooms and routines. It has been fantastic to see students growing in independence as they enter the classroom each morning, organise their belongings and begin building positive friendships across the cohort.

Students have also begun engaging with our Friendology program, exploring what it means to be a kind, respectful and supportive friend through discussions, role-plays and shared activities. We are incredibly excited for the learning, growth and joyful moments that lie ahead in Grade 1 this year.

Mathematics

In Mathematics, students have been developing their understanding of what it means to be a confident and capable mathematician. We have been exploring our number system through hands-on investigations using concrete materials such as bead frames, tens frames, number charts, Unifix cubes and icy-pole sticks.

Students have particularly enjoyed learning new mathematical games, practising turn-taking, fairness and problem-solving while strengthening their number knowledge. It has been wonderful to see their enthusiasm and willingness to challenge themselves as mathematicians.

English

Our students have been actively participating in our Phonics program, building strong foundations as readers and writers. Together, we have been establishing routines and expectations such as choosing “good-fit” books, practising whole-body listening and creating calm, focused spaces for writing. Students are enjoying exploring sounds, oral language and books responding through whole class instruction and participation. We are already seeing growing confidence and pride in their reading and writing efforts.

Setting Up for Success

The beginning of the year has focused on building strong relationships, understanding student interests and creating classroom environments where every child feels safe, valued and ready to learn. Through circle time, collaborative activities and discussions about friendship, resilience and celebrating differences, students have been developing a strong sense of belonging in Grade 1.

We are also looking forward to a special Grade 1 tradition, our Easter Bonnet Parade on Tuesday 31st of March. As the only cohort in the school to take part in this joyful event, students are excited to create and proudly share their bonnets with the community. It is always a wonderful celebration of students' creativity, confidence and the fun spirit of Grade 1.

We are extremely proud of the positive start our students have made and look forward to an exciting and successful remainder of Term 1
