Year 5/6 Team News

Hello Year 5/6 families, 

Welcome back to school for Term 3. The 5/6 team are thrilled to kick start the term with our House Points Timestables Challenge. Students have now brought home their baseline assessment, and we ask that you send back the parent slip to communicate your acknowledgement. We are sure that this will create some fun family competition! 

Student Voice:

Bastille Day: 

Last week, on Tuesday, we had Bastille Day on the 14 of July.

That day we had to dress up that was related to French. Everyone had lots of fun!

We had a mime, we had a professional accordion player and he was also French! We could all see that we had fun.

Also, the 5/6s did a competition where we had to make the Eiffel Tower out of dried spaghetti sticks and tiny marshmallows.

The assembly at the end of the day was marvellous!

T-Ball Divisional Finals:

Last week on Wednesday we went to the tee ball division finals. We were very excited to have a chance to play. we were playing three other teams in our community. We were lucky enough to make it because Newport’s coach invited us to play divisions and we tried our best and won 1 out of 3 games. We won with a perfect score of 21 home runs. It was a great journey to play against schools that came from a far. These schools came from Williamstown to Wyndham Vale.

We tried our best all throughout the season hitting home runs, making great catchers, cheering with our teammates, sharing lollies, singing on the bus and winning our first game by one home run against a more experienced team. We made a lot of memories from that.

What's Coming up in the Classroom in Term 3:

Reading: In Week 3, students are continuing their exploration of poetry forms and analysing them based on intention, mood and use of figurative language. They will begin to express their analysis as a paragraph. In Week 4, students will be reading informative text types to enhance their inquiry unit. They will begin with street food from around the world. 

Writing: In Week 3, students are working through the writing process on their own free verse poem. They will be required to publish this and recite it to the class. This forms part of their speaking and listening assessment for the term. In Week 4, students will be learning about how to take their skills with figurative language to expand description and create mood as an author. 

Numeracy: In Weeks 3&4, students will be working on Fractions. They will be learning to recognise equivalent fractions, compare like, related and unlike fractions and begin to solve problems with fractions utilising the 4 operations. 

Inquiry: In Term 3 our inquiry unit is titled, 'What's the Difference Between Here and There?' Students have begun their digital passports by exploring Australia and are now reading and viewing about places around the world. In Weeks 3 & 4, they will be researching places in Europe and Asia. 

Willy Kids/Respectful Relationships: In Weeks 3&4, Willy Kids are Brave. Students will reflect on a time when they have shown bravery and look forward to things that will require them to embody bravery.  Respectful Relationships this term explores gender and identity. We look at ways to be inclusive and understanding of everyone through not only our actions, but our words. 

CAMP 2026:

This year, our 5/6 students are headed to Coastal Forrest Lodge in Anglesea in Term 4. At the 2 night/3 day camp students will experience surfing and kayaking lessons at either Anglesea or Torquay. The camp does not host the entire cohort so is broken to into 2 separate camps- Grade 5 Camp and Grade 6 Camp. 

Grade 5 Camp: Mon 26th-Wed 28th October and Grade 6 Camp: Wed 28th-Fri 30th October. 

We will be sharing plenty more information about this year's camp, closer to the date. 

At this stage, we are seeking a $50 deposit to ensure cost of the buses to and from the camp are met. This means you are ensuring your child has a seat on the bus, and that the school will not be left with an out of pocket. 

This payment is to be made on Compass portal by 6th August. If it not made by this date, unfortunately your child will not have a seat on the bus and be unable to attend this year's camp. Should you wish to make a payment arrangement, please speak with the front office ASAP prior to 6th August. 

Important Dates for Term 3:

• Divisional Footy Finals: Friday 24th July, Students to meet at school and walk from school to Bayside Oval. 

• District Athletics- Wednesday 12th August

  Students who have made the athletics team will be heading to Newport Athletics track this time to compete against the 7 other schools within our district. This event will be communicated with students & families in the coming weeks.

• Week 6- 5/6C
• Week 8- 5/6B
• Week 10- Footy Day Assembly (5/6 team & students to host)

• Grade 5 Camp: Mon 26th-Wed 28th October (Term 4)
