Year One Team News

Hello Year One families,

The Grade 1 students have settled back into the routine of school. It was wonderful to see all of their beaming faces as they walked back into school ready and excited to learn for Term 3.  

Bastille Day 

Last Tuesday we celebrated Bastille Day. It was great to see a wonderful array of French inspired outfits and the energy and enthusiasm the students showed throughout the day.  

NAIDOC Week 

Students reflected on NAIDOC Week that occurred over the Winter Holidays. We honored the history and culture of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. We discussed the importance of our daily acknowledgment of country. 

Show and Tell (Starting Week 3) 

Next week Year 1 students will start Term 3 Show and Tell presentations. Students have a hard copy of the schedule and your classroom teacher has sent out a digital copy. Please try to encourage your child to remember what day they are on. If they miss a day because they are absent, they will be presenting the following day. 

Curriculum Focus: Weeks 3-4

Reading: During this term we will be covering stage 7.3 and 7.4 of the Little Learners Love Literacy program. Next week we will be learning about the long a sound as in chase to the gate. In week 4 we will be learning about the ‘soft c as in space’ and the ‘soft g as in cage’. 

Writing: We are looking at procedural writing - including required materials and writing steps in order with precise details. 

Numeracy:  We will continue to be learning about multiplicative thinking. With a focus on sharing between groups.  

Inquiry:  Our topic this term is around Geography. The past two weeks have seen students learn about Australian states and territories and their capital cities. During the remainder of the term we will be learning about other countries including their geography, cultures and celebrations. 

Willy Kids/Respectful Relationships: Our Willy Kids focus is “Willy Kids are Brave". We will be discussing and learning to understand what it means to be brave and what bravery might look like for different people. Our focus for Respectful Relationships this term is “Positive Gender Relationships”. Over the term students will reflect on their identity including their likes, dislikes and strengths. They will develop an awareness of positive and negative social behaviours and develop an appreciation of difference.
