Year 5/6 - Newsletter

Maths
Students have been exploring the connections between fractions, decimals and percentages, practising how to convert between them. They have also been calculating fractions, decimals and percentages of whole numbers using multiplication and division strategies, applying these skills to solve a range of problems.
Writing
In Writing, students have been creating persuasive pieces about child labour, linked to our class novel Rivet Boy. The novel tells the story of a boy sent to work on the Forth Bridge in Edinburgh in 1888. Students have been comparing the lives of children in the past and present while developing their ability to construct strong arguments and support their opinions with evidence.
Literacy
Students have continued their Literacy Circles, meeting with their groups to discuss their novels. They are exploring characters, themes and events, making connections to themselves, other texts and the wider world. Students are also developing their skills in making inferences and identifying figurative language to deepen their understanding of what they read.
Inquiry: A Journey Through Time
Our journey through history continues! Exploring a different decade each week, students have now reached the 1970s. They have been investigating changes in technology, entertainment, fashion and everyday life, comparing past experiences with the world we live in today.
Inquiry Project
Students may ask you, another family member or a friend to participate in an interview for their Inquiry project. These conversations will help them gather personal stories and experiences to connect with our learning about the past.
The project has been emailed to families, sent home in printed form and uploaded to Google Classroom, so a copy should be available through one of these options. Thank you for supporting your child with this task!
