Year 3/4 - Newsletter

Dear Parents & Carers,
We began our fortnight with a First Aid incursion, where students learnt about the acronym DR.ABCD and how to follow these steps in an emergency.
What's happened in 3/4 this fortnight?
English
We have continued our Structured Literacy novel study using Leo & Ralph by Peter Carnavas. Throughout the term, students have been exploring new and exciting vocabulary, applying a range of strategies to expand sentences and starting to write a narrative. In Morphology, we have focused on the sounds c and g make when followed by an e, i or y. In Grammar, students have been working on answering questions in full sentences making sure to restate the question.
Maths
Over the past fortnight, students have continued exploring fractions during our Fractional Thinking unit. We began comparing fractions and representing fractions on number lines, by counting fractional parts. Students then moved on to representing and identifying equivalent fractions using fraction bars, focusing on the connections (e.g between thirds, sixths, and twelfths). We then applied these understandings using arrays to find fractions of a set, helping students see how fractions relate to multiplication and division.
Inquiry
We have started our Festivals and Celebration learning through rotations amongst the ¾ classrooms. Each week the students will travel and use their passport to investigate a cultural celebration or festival. The students will discover Diwali, Carnevale, Abu Simbel, Greek Easter and Chinese New Year.
Friendology/Wellbeing
This week we have continued Topic 8 of The Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships Curriculum, which is ‘Positive Gender Relations’. Our focus over weeks 3 & 4 have been looking at the following:
- Personal boundaries and consent – respecting personal space and understanding that everyone has the right to say “no”.
Camp
We are deep into organising our camp. Please ensure you have completed and returned any medical forms. If you are in need of one, please contact your classroom teacher as any medication taken must be given/sighted by an adult. There will be spare forms available on the morning of camp.
We are also asking that overdue Dietary Forms are completed and submitted ASAP via the received email from Adanac. If you are requiring a new one sent, please contact Matthew Georges (matthew.georges@education.vic.gov.au).
Please note the ‘Packing List’ is up on Compass, giving you plenty of time to get organised.
Headphones - We have noticed a number of students do not have working headphones at school. Please check with your child to see if they need a new pair so they are ready for learning activities that require them.
