Festival of Stories Writing Workshop

Gallery Image

Last Friday, our Advanced English and Year 10 English Extension students visited the Echuca Library to participate in a writing workshop with acclaimed Australian author Jock Serong, as part of the Festival of Stories.

Students were treated to a fascinating insight into the craft of storytelling, exploring the creative process behind writing a novel and discovering the techniques authors use to captivate and engage their readers.

Jock shared his expertise and inspired students to put pen to paper, with notebooks quickly filling with notes from the session. Students left the workshop with a deeper appreciation of what makes great fiction and a renewed enthusiasm for crafting stories of their own.

It was a wonderful opportunity for our budding writers to learn from an accomplished Australian storyteller.

Thank you to Ms Ellen Bowman, Ms Charlotte Rolfe, and Mrs Corinda Grant for accompanying the students on this enriching excursion.

Year 7 Cross Curricular Science and Italian Excursion

Our Year 7 students enjoyed an exciting excursion to the Kyabram Fauna Park and the Italian Bocce Club, exploring native wildlife, experiencing Italian cuisine and, of course, playing bocce!

At the Fauna Park, students explored the incredible diversity of Australian wildlife and developed their understanding of animal classification, habitats and ecosystems. Seeing native animals up close provided a valuable opportunity to connect classroom learning with the natural world and appreciate the importance of protecting Australia’s unique wildlife.

The visit also encouraged students to observe animal adaptations and consider how different species survive in their environments, bringing their science studies to life in an engaging and memorable way.

The day continued with a visit to the Bocce Club, where students experienced an authentic Italian lunch and developed teamwork while enjoying some friendly competition. It was a wonderful chance for students to relax, interact with their peers and strengthen the positive relationships that are so important during their transition into high school.

Overall, the excursion was a fantastic day of learning, discovery and fun. Students returned with new knowledge, shared experiences and lasting memories, making it a valuable part of their Year 7 journey.

On the Science and Italian Excursion, we had lots of fun at the Fauna Park, and we got to roam around and find our animal. As we found more and more information about it, we all wrote it down on our assessment sheet. Then, at the Italian Bocce Club, we learnt how to play the game. All I can say is that I will leave it to the pros! Then we went inside and ate a pasta dish, finishing off with ice cream. Overall, it was a very fun trip.

The Year 7 excursion to the Kyabram Fauna Park and the Kyabram Bocce Club was an amazing experience for all the students. At the Fauna Park, we got the opportunity to learn about lots of different animals, native and introduced. At the Bocce Club, we got to play the American version of bocce (no rules!). We also ate a mostly authentic Italian meal, and we got to watch professionals play bocce. Thank you to all the staff we interacted with from the Bocce Club, Fauna Park and MAGS.

Our time in Kyabram was lots of fun. We researched our selected animals and found out lots of facts about them. We had fun looking at ‘Linguini’, the Tassie devil. We also had heaps of fun playing bocce, and we ate delicious spaghetti!

- Reflection by Francesca

The Fauna Park was fun and interesting. I saw many animals such as meerkats and koalas. Also, I saw two birds protecting their eggs in the enclosure. The Bocce Club was interesting. We learnt how to play bocce, and we ate some Italian food. Overall, the trip was fun.

- Reflection by Eliza

Our first activity in Kyabram was going to the Fauna Park. I loved seeing the kangaroos and, on the nature walk, I got to pat them. My friends and I also spent a lot of time looking at the birds and got to see a bird sitting on its eggs. We also played a few rounds of bocce and had some amazing pasta at the Bocce Club. Overall, it was an amazing trip with lots of laughter and fun.

It was very exciting seeing all the animals. My favourite animals were the kangaroos; they were so friendly and loved getting pats. My second favourite animal to see was the meerkats. They were so adorable, and we got to see them being fed. It was a very exciting trip.

- Reflection by Lucy

My trip to Kyabram was an experience I thought I would never come across.

At the Fauna Park, it was really fun getting to see the animals I picked and being able to see everybody else's animals that they picked. The pasta I had was wonderful, and I hope I can go back again.

- Reflection by Ebony

We went to the Kyabram Fauna Park to collect information about our chosen animals for our science assessment and visited the Kyabram Bocce Club, where we learnt to play bocce and had some spaghetti. My favourite part of the Fauna Park was the meerkats, and my favourite part of the Bocce Club was learning to play bocce.

- Reflection by Asha

On Monday, we went to the Kyabram Fauna Park, and afterwards we went to the Bocce Club. At the zoo, we saw different animals such as koalas, peacocks and different reptiles. My favourite part was the Bocce Club, where we played bocce and had delicious pasta and ice cream.

- Reflection by Will A

On our trip to Kyabram on Monday, we visited the Fauna Park for about two hours. During the first hour, one class had a tour of the animals and where everything is, while the other class had free time to observe and look at their animal for our science research task. Then we went to the Bocce Club and played bocce, which is like lawn bowls, in groups of four. Then we ate pasta. After that, we said thank you and went back on the bus to go home. My favourite part at the zoo was looking at my animal, and my favourite part at the Bocce Club was both of the activities.

- Reflection by Sophia

When we went to Kyabram, we visited the Fauna Park and got to see all the Australian animals. Then we went to the Bocce Club and got to play bocce and eat some pasta and ice cream that the ladies there made for us.

My favourite part at the zoo was when we got to go off with our friends and walk around the park and find our animal. I really liked getting to see the peacock, as that is the animal I am researching. My favourite part at the Bocce Club was getting to play bocce with my friends, as I had never played it before and really enjoyed it and got better as I continued to play.

- Reflection by Ivy

On Monday, we went to the Kyabram Fauna Park and the Bocce Club. We saw snakes, meerkats and quolls, and lots of other animals, but my favourite animal was the kangaroo.

The Year 7s went on a field trip to the Kyabram Fauna Park and the Italian Bocce Club. At the Kyabram Fauna Park, we went on a tour of some of the park animals with our guide, Vanessa. She showed us the koalas, meerkats and Tassie devils while giving us detailed explanations about their habitat, feeding habits and behaviour.

After that, we went to the Italian Bocce Club, where we got to learn how to play bocce in our class groups. My team won! After that, we were treated to a delicious lunch of Italian pasta and drumsticks. The Italian Bocce Club would be my favourite part of our time in Kyabram.

Agriculture and Primary Industries

The school has borrowed sheep, kindly provided by Malcolm Starritt, since last term. Year 9 students have undertaken a major assessment task comparing the weight gain of twin versus single birth lambs.

Malcolm generously gave up his time to assist the Year 12 Primary Industries class with lamb marking at school.

In Year 11 Agriculture, faecal samples were collected from the sheep paddocks before and after drenching and analysed microscopically for parasitic worm eggs to determine whether oral drenching was effective.

Students have also modified the school farm fences to accommodate the sheep and learned about many aspects of sheep husbandry, including low stress animal handling, assessing teeth to determine age, body condition scoring, nutrition, diseases, and checking eyelid and gum colour for signs of anaemia.

Science Models: Sustainability Projects

Gallery Image

Students explored sustainability by selecting a natural resource and creating a model to demonstrate its importance, the environmental and human impacts of its use, and possible solutions to reduce these impacts.

Their models highlighted the need to manage resources responsibly and protect the environment for future generations. Students also presented their ideas, demonstrating their understanding of how sustainable practices can help address environmental challenges.

Throughout the assembly, students reflected on the importance of service, supporting others and leading by example. Our Deputy Principal | Head of Secondary, Mr David Frazer, reminded everyone that leadership is not simply about holding a title, but about the everyday choices we make.

“Every time we make a good choice, we are leading.”

At Moama Anglican Grammar, we encourage students to develop the confidence, character and skills to make a positive difference in their communities.

Congratulations to all our Secondary Student Leaders! We look forward to seeing you lead with Compassion, Respect and Integrity, support your fellow students and strive for your personal best throughout the year ahead.

A Winning Story, A Promising Young Writer

Gallery Image

Congratulations to Year 11 student Matilda M, who has won the Junior Section of the inaugural Festival of Stories Storywriter Competition, held in Echuca–Moama from 16–18 October. The festival brought together writers, musicians, artists and storytellers to celebrate the power of storytelling through literature, music, art and shared cultural experiences.

Matilda's winning short story, She Through Time is I, explores themes of time, memory and ageing, using the symbolism of a river to reflect on the relationship between past and present, and how our identity endures through change.

Encouraged by her English teacher, Ms Rolfe, Matilda entered the competition as part of her English Advanced class. It was her first writing competition, making the achievement even more rewarding.

“This achievement has increased my confidence in my writing ability and encouraged me to place greater value on my own work. It has also motivated me to continue developing my skills and exploring creative writing.”

Matilda also acknowledges the guidance of her English teachers throughout her schooling, whose feedback and encouragement have helped her refine her ideas, experiment with different writing techniques and grow in confidence.

Her advice to aspiring young writers?

“Experiment with different ideas and approaches, and don't be afraid to write about something unconventional.”

Congratulations, Matilda, on this outstanding achievement and communal recognition of your writing talent.
