During our Open Afternoon, students and their families had fun creating their very own Teacher Monsters by playing the Math game, Dice Monster.
They rolled the dice and used a special key to work out which body part to draw each time. With every roll, their monster grew — sometimes with extra eyes and very wiggly arms!
Introducing the Foundie Teacher Monsters: Nici, Julia and Tom!
The activity was a fun way to combine creativity with Math, helping everyone practise basic number skills while sharing lots of giggles.
Nici Fausten (FNF)
Hi! I’m Nici, Foundation Team Leader, with experience teaching across a range of year levels. Over the years, I’ve developed a deep appreciation for the diverse ways children learn and engage with the world.
In recent years, I have undertaken professional learning through Harvard’s Playful Pedagogy courses, alongside leadership. This has significantly shaped my approach to teaching and learning. I am passionate about embedding playful learning principles in the classroom—creating environments where curiosity is valued, joy is present, and learners are empowered to take the lead.
I believe in the importance of exploring the unknown, encouraging multiple ways of thinking, and supporting children to develop confidence in themselves as capable and creative learners. My goal is to foster a classroom culture where students feel safe to take risks, ask questions, and discover their own pathways to understanding.
Tom Dartnell (FTD)
Hello, I'm Tom. This is my second year teaching Foundation. 2025 was a huge learning curve so I am really grateful to be back teaching the same year level, and to have the opportunity to build on the experience of last year.
My family also grew last year and our baby Jude is now one year old! I'm making every effort to slow down and appreciate the little moments of this incredibly fast ride.

Julia Jackson-Jin (FJJJ)
Hey, I'm Julia, and I am one of the Foundie teachers this year. I have been teaching for 3 years and have only ever taught Foundies, because it's the best! I think one of the best parts about being in Foundies is teaching kids how to read, it is truly magical!
Outside of school I love going to dance class, trying new restaurants, and hanging out with my friends! I am so excited for another year in Foundation!
