ATYP Intersection

On Tuesday the 11th of August Stage 5 Drama travelled to the Australian Theatre for Young People to watch the World Premiere of ‘Orbit’, part of the Intersection Series.

As ATYP states Intersection is “where performance, writing and learning meet.

 Intersection Festival gives school students and teachers the opportunity to rehearse and perform brand-new Australian plays, written specifically for young actors through ATYP’s National Studio Program.”

Each year early-career playwrights are invited to the National Studio, and from there 10 scripts are selected for Intersection. These scripts are sent to participating schools Australia-wide who then stage their own Intersection Festivals, where students direct and stage their own interpretations of these new works. These performances are videoed, sent to ATYP, and then a performance of each script is selected to be performed at The Rebel Theatre at ATYP.

This year we were lucky enough to have Bronte Secker and Frieda Montefiore selected to perform ‘Begin to Glow’ by Nic Davidson at ‘Orbit’, the world premiere of this year’s Intersection Festival. Our two performers spent the day in rehearsals at ATYP with Artistic Director George Kemp, before performing that evening with students from 9 other schools from around Australia. The rest of Stage 5 Drama came along to watch. Thank you to Mr Laffin and Ms Barclay for bringing our audience to the evening show.

Bronte and Frieda were able to meet playwright Nic Davidson after the performance which was a real honour. Both our own students, and those from other schools, spoke highly of Bronte and Frieda’s acting and delicate direction of the highly conceptual script where the story of two young people finding their first steps towards love, is mirrored in the personifications of the binary stars ‘Albireo A and B’. Our young performers were outstanding ambassadors for BMGS and our Drama Department.
