From the Head of Mathematics

Mathematics Learning Hub

Last week, the Mathematics Faculty launched our Mathematics Learning Hub, providing students with a dedicated space to seek support, extend their thinking and learn with and from one another.

It has been wonderful to see students so readily embrace the initiative. Year 7 students have been helping one another to work through challenging concepts, while Year 11 students have generously volunteered their time to support students across different year groups. Students have also been keen to seek assistance, ask questions and engage more deeply with their mathematical learning.

The Learning Hub is more than a space for students to get help. It is an opportunity to develop student agency, deeper understanding and confidence, while recognising the value of learning collaboratively and helping others. By sharing their knowledge, students strengthen their own understanding while developing communication, problem-solving and leadership skills.

At the heart of the initiative is our belief that “learning is a change in behaviour due to experience.” Every question asked, challenge attempted, explanation given and mistake reflected upon provides an experience that can change and strengthen how a student thinks, learns and approaches mathematics.

Through the Learning Hub, we are continuing to build a community of learners within and across year levels - one where students are encouraged not only to grow as mathematicians, but also to contribute to the learning and growth of those around them.
