Diwali

On Saturday 18th October, our Arts Centre transformed into a space where everyone was welcome to celebrate Diwali, an Indian celebration also known as the Festival of Light.

While there are diverse meanings and customs depending on where you’re from or the religion you follow, there’s one central theme that unites them all: Diwali celebrates the victory of good over evil.

There were many special guests on the day, live performances, henna, opportunities to taste a wide variety of Indian food and connect with other people from our community. In each performance, the entertainers explained to the audience the significance of their dance, instrument or costumes, and helped them to learn something new about Indian culture.

The event was organised Shanthi Anthony – the EAL Leading Teacher for the Mitchell Shire and supported by Anita Joseph. It promoted mental health and wellbeing, with collaboration from the Federation of Indian Associations of Victoria, and the Mental Health Foundation Australia. It was funded by Mitchell Shire.
