News from Monash University

Monash Teaching Suitability Test (MTeST)

Late last term, Monash University launched a new non-academic test designed to assess teacher suitability. The Monash Teaching Suitability Test (MTeST) is designed for entry into Monash Initial Teacher Education courses only and cannot be used to apply for other institutions. Importantly, this is a free alternative to Casper.

Students do not need to book in for the test. It will be held every Tuesday from 10.00am – 10.00pm online and only takes 15 minutes.

VTAC applicants are advised to complete either the MTeST or Casper by the following dates:

November 12, 2023 – December 2023 Round 1 (only current Year 12 domestic and current Year 12 International students)
December 5, 2023 – January 2024 Rounds 1, 2 domestic students and January Rounds 1,2,3,4 International students
January 10, 2024 – February 2024 Round 1 domestic students, January Round 5 International students
January 21, 2024 – February 2024 Rounds 2,3 Domestic students

For applicants who sat both tests, Monash will use the better result of the two.

New Engineering Specialisation

From Semester 1 in 2024, Robotics and Mechatronics (the AI and Automation streams) will be offered as a new Engineering specialisation in the Bachelor of Engineering (VTAC code: 2800328091) and also in both of the Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) and Bachelor of Computer Science (VTAC code: 2800311391) AND the Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) and Bachelor of Information Technology (VTAC code: 2800311401) double degrees.

News from Deakin University

Bachelor of Laws/Bachelor of Politics, Philosophy and Economics

From Semester 1 2024, Deakin University will be offering the new double degree -

Bachelor of Laws/Bachelor of Politics, Philosophy and Economics. Students can choose to complement their law degree with an in depth understanding of how power, incentives and ethics influence real-world decisions by studying Deakin's Bachelor of Politics, Philosophy and Economics. Students will acquire knowledge of political systems, economic ways of thinking and ethical and moral principles alongside a solid foundation of legal skills from Deakin Law School to open up a range of unique career opportunities. This double degree will see students develop specialised knowledge of how law, business, government and consumers shape society and graduate with a unique, practical skill set to enact change.

All new Bachelor of Criminology/Bachelor of Business double degree

Students wanting to understand the legal and ethical implications of business practices will be able to analyse and address real-world problems where criminology and business intersect by studying the new Bachelor of Criminology/Bachelor of Business. Knowledge of the fundamentals of business, the Australian criminal justice system, as well as a deep understanding of the causes and impacts of crime will mean graduates will have access to a range of unique career opportunities.

Psychiatrists and Psychologists: What's the Difference?

According to the Your Health in Mind website, there are three main differences between psychiatrists and psychologists:

Psychiatrists are medical doctors, psychologists are not.
Psychiatrists prescribe medication, psychologists can't.
Psychiatrists diagnose illness, manage treatment and provide a range of therapies for complex and serious mental illness. Psychologists focus on providing psychotherapy (talk therapy) to help patients.

It would seem many people get psychiatrists and psychologists confused with each other.

Both psychiatrists and psychologists understand how the brain works, our emotions, feelings and thoughts. Both can treat mental illness with psychological treatments (talking therapies).

However, psychiatrists attend medical school and become medical doctors before doing specialist training in mental health – with up to 11 years of training. Because they are doctors, psychiatrists understand the links between mental and physical problems. They can also prescribe medications.
