Term 3 in STEM

This term in STEM, students across all year levels have been diving into the wonders of Earth and Space Science with great curiosity and enthusiasm. 

Our Grade 5/6 students have been busy investigating weathering, erosion, transportation, and deposition, even testing different materials to see how erosion can be reduced. They also became natural disaster experts, researching events like earthquakes, tsunamis, bushfires, and cyclones, and proudly presenting their findings in creative slideshows that explained causes, impacts, and ways we can stay safe. 

Grade 3/4 students have been hands-on Earth scientists, exploring rocks, minerals, soils, and water as valuable resources. They classified rock types, tested soil samples, and modelled the water cycle through fun experiments like ‘Water Cycle in a Bag’ and using celery and dye to observe plant transpiration in action. 

Our Grade 1/2 students have been exploring how weather and the seasons influence our lives, making beautiful season wheels and flip-books to share at home. They’ve also compared the four seasons with the Wurundjeri calendar and are now excitedly learning about our solar system.

In Week 4, we also had a fantastic time celebrating Science Week! 

Each morning kicked off with a super science quiz, and the excitement built all week as classes competed for the top spot. At Friday’s assembly, we congratulated 5/6A for taking out 1st place, with 5/D and 5/6E sharing 2nd place and 3B proudly earning 3rd place. 

On Thursday, our Supercharged STEM Club was absolutely buzzing with energy and curiosity! Students explored animal specimens under microscopes, programmed Bee-Bots, experimented with non-Newtonian fluids (oobleck), coded with Scratch, tackled Lego engineering challenges, and even cracked codes with Caesar cipher wheels. It was jam-packed with discovery and fun, and it was wonderful to see so much enthusiasm and teamwork from every student - well done, everyone!
