Problem-solving is the engine that connects science, mathematics, and technology to the real world, transforming complex challenges into practical solutions. When students develop strong problem-solving skills, they learn to view setbacks not as failures, but as valuable learning opportunities. They gain the confidence to test, refine, and improve their ideas until they achieve success.

 

In a rapidly changing technological world, the ability to adapt, persevere, and find solutions is more important than ever. Combined with adaptability and resilience, effective problem-solving skills are essential for preparing students to thrive in their future careers and contribute to solving the significant global challenges of tomorrow.

 

This is why Oberon’s STEM program focuses on developing students’ problem-solving resilience from Year 7 through to VCE. Through targeted, real-world learning experiences at the Geelong Tech School and engagement with STEM professionals from organisations such as CSIRO and Deakin University, students are exposed to authentic challenges and experienced mentors who model professional problem-solving practices.

 

One of our three CSIRO STEM Professional partners, Greg Lampard, spent more than a decade at Telstra as a Strategic Architect and Lead Solution Engineer. Now retired, Greg generously volunteers his time to support Oberon’s senior Engineering students as they tackle complex design and engineering projects. His extensive industry experience and expertise in defining and solving problems have been invaluable to our students.

Student in Focus: Hilay Patel

For several months, Hilay has been working tirelessly on his Self-Balancing Robot project. Throughout the process, he utilised AI tools to help debug his code and explored countless online resources to investigate potential solutions. Despite his efforts, the project presented ongoing challenges, and at times the problems seemed impossible to overcome.

However, the motto in our Engineering classrooms is simple: “Good engineers never give up.”

 

Hilay embraced this mindset and continued refining, testing, and troubleshooting his design. Eventually, his persistence paid off when his robot successfully balanced on its own.

 

As a teacher, witnessing moments like these is incredibly rewarding. The sense of pride and achievement on a student's face after overcoming weeks of frustration and hard work is unmatched. Hilay’s success is a terrific example of the resilience and determination that great engineers demonstrate every day.

 

Congratulations, Hilay. You have all the qualities of a future engineer.

During Semester One, more than 200 Oberon students participated in problem-solving programs delivered through our partnership with the Geelong Tech School. With National Science Week fast approaching, students will have further opportunities to engage in hands-on STEM experiences, while also helping to inspire the next generation by supporting STEM learning activities in our local primary schools.
