Celebrations in Senior School

Congratulations to our students who represented Sacred Heart at the Dendy athletics carnival. And a big congratulations to Lily B, who was the only female from year 6 who particpated on the day.

Year 5

Literacy

Students wrapped up their study of Black Cockatoo, enjoying rich discussions as they explored the characters and their choices in greater depth with a focus on the main character Mia. Alongside this, we continued to build our writing skills by learning how to use appositives and a range of conjunctions to create more detailed and engaging sentences. Students also explored the difference between concrete and abstract nouns and practised a variety of spelling patterns to support their accuracy. In week four we will start Dirrarn, book two in the series.

Maths

Our Year 5s have been working hard on learning about fractions on number lines and comparing equivalent and non-related fractions. We have also been exploring 3D shapes such as triangular pyramids, square-based pyramids and rectangular prisms. Students have drawn 2D nets to represent these shapes and deepen their understanding.

Our next focus will be decimals, and we are looking forward to building on these skills.

Topic

Students have wrapped up their learning on animal adaptations, exploring all the quirky and fascinating ways animals have evolved over time to survive. We’ve now jumped into the world of plant survival and adaptations, and the curiosity has continued!

This week, we focused on floral mimicry—when a flower evolves to look like another animal to help with pollination and reproduction. Students loved investigating this clever trick of nature. They also chose a plant, such as a lily pad, Venus flytrap or dandelion, and explored how it adapts to survive and reproduce in its environment. It’s been a fun and fascinating start to our new topic!

Year 6

Literacy

In Literacy, our Year 6 students have begun their study of Tigg and the Bandicoot Bushranger. In the first few lessons, they explored the historical context of the Australian gold rush and what life was like on the goldfields, building important background knowledge for the novel. Students have also been developing their vocabulary and started reading the text, focusing on understanding the main character, Tigg, and the events in the opening chapters. It has been a great start, with lots of thoughtful discussion and growing curiosity about the story.

Maths

Our Year 6 students have been diving into the world of fractions, tackling some tricky concepts with great enthusiasm. They’ve been using models and number lines to compare and order fractions, as well as exploring how different fractions can actually be equivalent. Students have also been challenged to simplify fractions and compare those with both related and unrelated denominators. In week 3 Our Year 6 students started exploring 3D shapes from a new perspective, investigating cross-sections and how slicing objects can reveal different shapes. They’ve been identifying and sorting objects based on these cross-sections, and learning about the properties of 3D shapes It’s been a hands-on and engaging way to deepen their understanding of geometry!

Topic

Our Year  6 students have been diving into the exciting world of electricity and energy! They’ve tracked how electricity has developed over time by building timelines of major discoveries, and have had great discussions about the huge impact electricity has on our everyday lives and the environment. Students have also been exploring how we can all play a part in using less electricity and making smarter choices. Along the way, they’ve investigated a range of energy sources, from solar, wind and hydro power to bioenergy, geothermal and ocean energy before comparing some amazing renewable energy projects from around the world.

Check in with your child and learn about the projects they have started in class.
